As well as one super chuffed step-son (loves his Carrera Blast) I also have a happy Wife!
My Wife is disabled (spinabifida & paraplegic from birth) and has been a bit miffed that the rest of us toddle of on our bikes and she struggles to keep up in her standard wheelchair.
We've looked at handcycles, attachments and off-road wheel chairs but the prices are astromonical (between £2k & £6k).
Had looked at getting one of the cheaper attachments for her old/spare chair on cyclescheme and getting a set of off-road wheels seperate.
I occasionally look on ebay to see whats available, I spotted this a couple of days a go:
Starting price of £250 with a reserve of £300 including the wheelchair. Needs a bit of tlc but thought it might be worth a punt.
No bidders until 4pm today - wasn't holding out much hope as the chair & attachment are worth probably £600 as they stand.
Well I managed to win in the last minute for the bargain price of £322!!!!!
Wife is well pleased and we need to take a trip to Hollyhead to pick it up in the next couple of weeks.
Will change the tyres to something more suitable for the chase & hicks and fit some guards inside the chair against the wheels but should be good to go.
Wow where there's a will there's a way and i bet your as chuffed as she is that she can join you, disability shouldn't be a barrier to doing what you want to do, some doc said to my mum that i wouldn't be able to do certain things because i had asthma when i were a lad but i took no notice and did it anyway, mtb'ing gives you freedom from everday shit, so big thumbs up fella, enjoy your family days out on the trails
Hicks will be ideal for your wife just a little down hill by the lakes and a nice steady blue well worth the trip just for the latter cake I'll keep my eyes out for you ... Ps well done on the bargain
That's fantastic mate - yes deffo keep the pics coming after the TLC. I fully expect to see it tarted up with some bling. Chuffed for your Mrs, will keep an eye open for you all!
Bit of an update. Had new cables, chain, barrel adjuster and spare set of shifters arrive over the last couple of weeks. Wife was away this weekend so thought I'd get cracking on a service.
Old chain:
New cables:
Started to strip brake & shifters off for a service:
Really gunked up with dried old grease:
Gave it a clean with GT85 and relubed with a bit of 3in1. Rear shifter working ok now can select all gears.
New cables and adjuster:
Front shifter will only engage 2nd gear - need to have another look at it (gor a spare but want to try and fix this one lol).
Reset brakes and replaced cables:
Just got front mech & shifter to sort and can get gears indexed.
Think I might be able to ditch a couple more links out of the chain too as is seems a bit slack in some gears.
Got some new tyres on order too.

It's all starting to come together .. You might want to change the spelling of shifter ..something quite different has been posted ! Looking forward to hearing about the maiden voyage ... Nice work ..Mr.Dirk !
So go on ...on your way now,but know you're not alone.Dark sails cruise through these waters ..in the pond of memories...
Well finally got out on the maiden voyage tonight. Just a gentle pootle around the visitors centre. Couple little tweeks to make to set up/position and throw some better tyres on. Overall very successfull - one happy wife!
Absobloodylutely brilliant ! That is some contraption ...pick your arguements with the missus very carefully in the future as by the look of it on the video her upper body strength is going to be unbelievable ..she'll deck you in one ! I've never seen anything like that machine before and hadn't quite realised how it would work ..it's amazing ! Who is producing the sound effects at the beginning of the video ..or have you got a pet family crow flying just above you ? Haha ! Definitely get some chunky tyres ..I mean she doesn't want to be known as a roadie ...does she ? Well done to you both ...
Well had an awesome day riding with the Wife & kids. She did about 6 miles around the visitors centre and then started to feel brave. I left her there and dropped the kids at Grannies as they'd had enough and drove to Birches Valley. I rode back up to Marquis drive to meet up with her again and we then rode down to Birches along the blue/green route. Needed a bit of help on the last up hill to Birches due to slipping front wheel but apart from that she did it all. Really proud. Finished off with a well deserved icecream!
