Well looks like there'll be no winter riding for me this year & early next year...... Been to see the consultant about my on going shoulder problem. Have been advised to have surgery to provide a permanent fix. Basically the AC joint (where collar bone connects to shoulder blade) is mashed - bones have impacted & are now roughed up and there's a build up of fluid which is seperating the joint. So surgery will smooth off the section of shoulder blade and then they'll chop 5-10mm from the end of my collar bone to tidy that up..... Should have taken a snap of my xray as it looked quite a mess! Have defered surgery until November as it would possibly happened back end of school summer hols and I don't want to miss the good weather with the kids - and I've entered a few rides that I want to do!! Not sure how long it will be after surgery that I can ride again. Will be having a steroid/cortizone injection in the interim for a bit of pain relief. Feeling quite down about this for some reason

Chin up mate, I had a shoulder problem all of 2013 and while I didn't need surgery as the cortizone injection worked I still had a long time off any proper riding. My mate had the same as you and it has taken him 6 months before he could play golf again but he has said it's like having a new shoulder so well worth it.
You'll have to find another hobby before you go nuts though. Fortunately, I have a dog and found that I walked loads more than usual.

It's a fraction out of your life and if you come back fixed then it will have been worth it ..if the '74 Iin your user name refers to the year you were born ..then you are 42/43 years old ? Seriously you have years ahead of you yet so dont feel down ..just look forward to coming back stronger because you will ...

After 18 months of pretty much constant pain & being fobbed off I should feel relieved that it's finally getting sorted. Don't know if it's the thought of surgery (even though it'll be keyhole) of the thought of recovery time that's getting to me.
The worst injury I've ever had was a severely torn calf which required 4 months of physio and deep muscle massage (which was more painful than the injury lol). I'm nowhere near as fit as I want to be (or was a few years ago) and I'm not sure if that's going to impede my recovery.
It's going to mean some short term changes around the house etc. with how much I can help my wife, but I can't help worrying that even though it's a fairly straight forward procedure (apparently) that I'm going to end up in the very small minority that it's not a total success for and be back where I am.
I'm usually quite a positive person but this has got me freaked out and feeling all pessimistic!

Seriously ..stay positive If the worst came to the worst and it didn't work ..isn't it better to have tried ..you have nothing to lose by doing so ! Hey ..I must have had a brain freeze when it came to working out your age ..it was pretty basic maths really ! Durrrrrr!!!!

That's a bummer, I have s similar condition with my left elbow. Should of had it operated on nearly 15 years ago.... Now it constantly hurts... I'd advise you to definatley have this done!

So have been to see the consultant today.....
Good news!! - he wants to hold off surgery as the results of my last scan show no ligament/tendon damage and the separation on the AC joint appears to have settled down. Still got slight impingment in rotator but thats muscular so physio scheduled to try and sort that. Have been to told to carry on as normal and make a note of anything that causes discomfort/pain.
Seeing him again in a few months to see how things are.
Slightly releived (understatment lol).
