For me it has but it's very much a means to an end. I've only got one as I train by heart rate, and it's next to impossible to stay in the right zones on an MTB. It's not that fun but it does the job.

Defiantly improves fitness got one after riding with a few guys who do and getting totalled on hills couple of uphill stretches ive knocked minutes off my climb time really does help. Plus as said you can use it for cheeky evening rides or errands.

Good man ..try to resist buying Bic razor blades too ..and tell the missus to keep the Immac under lock and key ! Tis a dangerous road you embark upon when you even think of crossing to the dark side ...

Just found I had a spare hour so did 26k on my roadie. By the time I had got the MTB sorted I would have done half that distance and not a even reached the woods!

surely riding an mtb on road or bopping about would have more effect on fitness , than a bike that rolls fast and smooth

perfect example, fancied going to a car show yesterday in a village about 12 miles away with lots of hills I knew there would be no parking so took the road bike, took me 45 minutes quite enjoyable really.

I think it is down to the gearing and on the roadie it makes you want to go faster all the time so I push it more! I think with a roadie you pedal constantly where as the MTB can be more relaxed.

I find that as well, I keep pushing myself and rarely stop pedalling, the bike just wants to go "fast" all the time where as my MTB likes to cruise

Pretty much this, nothing against roadie lads at all but it ain't my thang, so I'll leave it too. A bloke at work who knows I'm into mtb and who must assume that means I love all things 2 wheeled keeps trying to tell me about average speeds and times and trips to the velodrome but I keep telling him I ain't fecking well interested! Borin chunt

Actually thinking after last nights ride i have no need for a roadie i only did the Blue route around the chase total of 9 miles but felt good after it and managed a few climbs with no real trouble even the last slow climb and right hand turn and nasty climb after that made both in one go without stopping or getting off the bike .
i am thinking now if i use that route for a training loop as it gives you some low gradient climbs ans some nice short steeper climbs if i attack these right i will improve my fitness no end , it felt really good to get up those climbs in one as i have never managed it before even the other week out with Jay and Pez i hade to stop and have a breather not this time i just kept pushing and saying to myself shut up you can stop at the top and it worked .
so the roadie is on hold but i am gona go back to spin classes to help with the fitness

It's too late Bob, that voice will always be there now every time you are on the road "you need a road bike, it would be better, it's only one more bike, i won't wear lycra........." It got me eventually and I love it. In all fairness I have ridden the roadie 10 times compared to the MTB 100 this year, says it all really!

I'd love to get a road bike or Hybrid bike for road rides. The only reason I won't is because I'd be shitting myself the whole time I'm riding.

Why are peeps so worried about riding on the roads, or maybe it is just me. I dont have a problem although I do live in a semi rural area so not dense traffic but it can travel at high speed (than it should) on some of the country roads. I worry more when Im out on my MTB in the dales on my own as if/when I wipe out Im totally on my own and not always within a phone signal (if I could access it)

I think in busy towns and cities its always more dangerous purely because there are more cars. I prefer riding out of the city sticking to cycle routes then when I get into the sticks out onto the roads

The stats are out there, cyclists are killed or badly injured on the roads daily - it's on telly all the time, my roadie mates are always having close shaves. MTBing is a lot, lot safer than riding a road bike, that's just a fact mate. I'd rather crash into a tree than be dragged under the wheels of a bus or a HGV and have my pelvis smashed to pieces...hang on, actually I'd rather have neither
