On the recent ride with Kooch and Jan, towards the end I was getting a real bad cramp in the quads above my left knee. Unusual for me as I've always been one of those that has never really suffered cramps. Finished the ride ok but was in some discomfort on the night, felt like a real bad dead leg. Turns out over the last few days it looks like I've managed to put a small tear in the muscle (feck knows how), I recognise the feeling from my footy days. Worse thing is I am on 15 off so should be out every day and I've also got Bowderdale on the 2nd, what do I do? rest up today and tomorrow and try a gentle one on Sunday to loosen it off or just keep off the bike til the 2nd? Is there a Doc in the house?

Not a Doc but rest it for 4/5 days and start with a gentle ride out but don't use the 2nd as your first ride back in!

Inside or outside quads?
Ice it, compression sleeve for a few hours a day and after exercise, stretches and light strengthening exercises.
As long as you don't go bonkers on the ride you'll be reet, did the tour of the pennines with hodgy at the weekend with a slight tear in my groin and it didn't get any worse. Just be sensible!
Have I mentioned a compression sleeve? Get one.

Inside - thanks mate good suggestion, I'll get on it. As Jimbo says don't want to try and do Bowderdale as a first ride back so I'll wait til Sunday and have a steady one, perhaps do the Cannock Blue or something and take the climbs steady. Being injured is shoite but I mustn't whine too much, a riding buddy bost his ankle at the weekend and is looking at an operation to right it.

One of the lads in 'Team Strap On', you know the lads who I originally started with and whose pink MTB shirt I wore at Snowdon? They were all doing a marathon event (can't think where) they asked me to go but as you know, racing and events ain't my thang. Anyhoo the one lad, Rick (who is a senior paramedic, ironically), was on his 5th lap of the course when he came off and snapped his ankle - it's a bad one too as it will need pinning. Poor bleeder. He ain't had the op yet but he's already planning his first ride back Edit: Just looked on his Strava - it was the Mayhem event at Gatcombe woods.

Sit on a chair with your bad leg sticking out in front of you, turn your foot so it's pointing away from the other leg: lift it up slowly (doesn't have to be high) and slowly lower. Repeat x 10. 3 sets twice a day. I'm not a physio but I did have this exercise recommended to me for quad strengthening when I had a problem with my knee.

I'll be there matey - looking forward to it and already arranged a car share with Steormy. I was just asking in case someone like Andy popped up with good advice, so glad I did. Even if the worse came to the worse and it flared up again whilst on the Bowderdale run, I'd just turn around and go back to the cars. I don't think it's too bad, more of a niggle than anything I'll just be careful to let it settle for a couple of more days.
