As some of you know I'm up in Applecross this week or to be more precise ..Upper Toscaig ..which is 4 miles from Applecross on the Southern Peninsula ..its a family holiday ..but my wonderful missus has allowed me to bring the bike. This morning i was up at 5.30 am and out on the trail by 6.00am ..it starts literally from the front door and having walked some of it yesterday ..i knew it was going to be technical and good ! A fairly short ride at only 8 miles there & back I was looking forward to being " home " before the rest of the family were awake ..i was ..but unfortunately not for having completed the ride ..disaster struck 45 mins in when trying to uncleat for a techy push ...i found that I couldnt and did a Graham ..falling to the side ! Upon investigation i found that the whole of one side of my shoe had split away and it would have been stupidity to carry on . Didnt stop me from enjoying the climbing that i did ..nor the fantastic mainly downhill on the way back ..i have taken pics ...but thats for later ..we are off to Alpine Bikes in Inverness ..for a touch of retail therapy ..this is going to be expensive as the missus and kids will also have to be adequately compensated in the shopping centre there .. But a mans gotta do ...n all that !

A few pics ... The start of the trail ... Tough climbs to start ...but you get to ride it down on the way back... Navigation is easy ..just follow the poles On and on and on on and on ..we dont stop rockin til the break of dawn ! Looking back ( or the view to look forward to on the return ) A bit of gnar! Breakfast on the hill ..Mr Stag and his laydeez This small loch was as far as I got before my boot split and common sense kicked in ..but i will try to get back before the end of the week ..i really want to see the ruins at the end ....but what a trail ..i would like to think that i was the first mountain biker along this track as there is absolutely no evidence of anyone having gone before ..not least because there is an 8' high deer fence to contend with near to the start ! But hey ..im probably not ...[ br] Last couple ....

The reason for aborting the ride ..no support meant it was difficult to clip in and out ... Replaced with these bad boys ...Bontrager Evoke DLX mtb shoe ...very comfy fit ..review to follow once ridden !

Those trails look ace, the place names look pretty unpronounceable though, if I got lost around there I would be up shit creek.

Next up ...I have been allowed 1 full day to ride ..so it couldn't be anything other than my favourite trail in Britain ..Applecross to Kenmore and back ..I have not been on anything better since riding it with Dave , Jean , Colin & Ian back in 2012... The Torridon route takes some beating ..especially the drop down to Annat at the end ..and I would have loved to have done the Ben Damph Estate ride ..but this one just burns brightly in my memory! Being here again though just reminds you of how much top notch riding is in this corner of Scotland ..and makes me want to return on a proper mtb trip as soon as possible ...!

Is inverness not a fair bit away from applecross for shopping? Aye indeed it is, at least a couple of hours drive, probably the only way to get a new pair of bike shoes as there is absolutely NO shops to speak of on the west coast near Applecross, it really is quite remote mate
