Flagged as a Taboo subject in terms of what not to discuss....Never-the- less I'm interested in what you use ( not as a" my lights are better than yours discussion")...so whats your set up and how do you rate it? I have had an Exposure Maxx D for a good few years now which at the time I paid a bloody fortune for £320.00...720 lumens and I thought it was the dogs bollocks at the time...It is still going strong and being rechargeable it avoids any trailing wires sitting as it does on my bars. I always thought that it had its downside though ....only lighting the area where the bars pointed it and listened with interest as more of the lads converted to a helmet mounted system...with the added advantage of lighting the trail in the direction you were actually looking. On the recommendation of my mate Ian Bell who runs the bike hire and shop at Kielder and Bellingham and who I ride with quite a bit www.thebikeplace.co.uk...I purchased a set of Sanguan 2piece lights ...which have second generation Leds...with a built in coolant for heat dissipation ...weigh fook all are helmet mounted with a seperate switch which can also be mounted on the side of the helmet and controls the 4 different power settings. The power output is amazing ...2200 lumens..there is also 3 tiny leds on the back of the unit to indicate the charge level ...but I have done rides in excess of 3 hours on full power without the charge dipping at all. Although I dont really need to I combine these with my bar mounted Maxx D to give a claimed 2920 lumen output ....night becomes day ...did i mention that these were only £90.00 when i bought them ( may have increased now?) ... and totally out perform the Exposure's So what do you use?

I've got one if those cree jobbies off eBay, think I paid £26 for it. I've had it for nearly 2 years now and it's still going strong and plenty bright enough at 1500 lumens.

I run a single cree ebay jobbie on helmet with battery in my pocket and a Solarstorm X2 cree jobbie on the bars with battery fastened to stem , works great imo and cheap

c&b seen 1200 lumen on the bars (£50) and working fine after about 18 months.and a cheapo dealextreme 1200 lumen helmet mount.still working after about 2 years apart from the low battery indicator doesn't do owt. I use back-up batteries for both set ups so I have a good 4 hours of light on full.but don't always use em on full so have never run out light. I have a question to ask about power of lights/the human eye. that i'll ask in another post.

Two 15 quid Cree jobbies for me, one on the noggin and one on the bars with a £5 wide angle lens. The pouch the batteries come in are utter shite though, I've modified a pump holder as a bike mount and is much better.

right so! I ve asked this question in other places and no-one really knows the answer. consider using say a 1500 lumen light.then your eyes become accustom to that available light.then compare that with using a 1000 lumen light, once your eyes have become accustom to that will there be a noticable difference? bearing in mind that your eyes will adjust accordingly.i'd think a bigger difference in light output would make a difference, but im wondering if the human eye will compensate for smaller differences...................well?...what do you reckon?

Ignore the quoted lumens as they are mostly bollox , go with what other people recommend , I generally run on the mid power setting with both of mine and my old eyes can cope well enough to go nearly as fast as in daylight . It can be a bit spooky whilst out alone though

yeah the lumens quoted are just figures.but I mean to compare 2 lights with one slightly brighter than the other

Not being able to compare 2 different lights I don't know , what I can compare is the difference between low , mid and high on the X2 , low is not bright enough to be comfortable but I don't notice a big difference in what I can see between mid and full , hence running on mid to conserve battery , full can actually be too bright at times and reduce visibility .

I think this is partly where im coming from. it could be easy to be drawn into thinking that brighter is better (it could be I don't know) lights are getting brighter, 1000 lumens were considered to be mega bright.

I have hubby's old exposure enduro light on the bars (as he bought a new maxx d) and again the exposure joystick for my helmet, think I might have a look at the cree though as the enduro is going flat quite quickly when riding

I have a c and b seen and an eBay jobbie.
Very good lights but if I could afford an exposure light then that is what I would buy.
Well.... In truth I can afford whatever light I want.... But I am too tight to fork the dosh out and I am shit scared that it would be superseded 12 months later.

They are in no way good value for money anymore ( if they ever were) .... The sanguan lights that I have completely blow my maxx d out of sight ( so to speak ) ...at a third of the price.

To be honest mate - I doubt if there is much difference between that and a £28 ebay jobbie - 'tis an aspirational thing
