For me and my boy to go MTB'ing together I've hired a bike for him and even got him his very own Camelbak. He's really excited, so much so he had me up a 7am this morning. He's mad keen on BMX bikes and I'm hoping this transfers over to MTB after today. It'll go 1 of 2 ways. He'll either hate it and we'll be home within the hour or he'll love it and we'll be out all day. He's not ridden with gears before or hydraulic brakes or off road for that matter so, an hour or so on the field will be our first port of call. After a bit of practice, I think we'll do two or three sections of Follow the Dog, maybe the whole thing if he really enjoys it. I think the sight of Cardiac Hill will put him off doing that though. Anywho, wish me luck

I can't believe you've dumped me to go riding with your lad... Second thoughts, he's got more chance of keeping up with you than I have. Hope he loves it, like I said to Kalli, I wish I could get my buggers into it. Have a good 'un, if I see you both out I'll wave!

Well, HE LOVED IT He had a bit of trouble getting his head around gears but the hired bike had those ridiculous twist grip shifters which I don't think helped. Apart from that, he had a great day. We started off on a field to get him used to the bike. The field has some steep-ish slopes at one end and he soon found them and started shooting down them. The place was crazy busy with it being school holidays and sunny so, we went off to a nice quiet corner of the forest and started some jumping which is what he wanted to do.. We started, as you do, with some slopes and small steps etc.. Then it was jump time. He'd never jumped before (even though he claims to be a stuntman).. Anywho, to cut a long story short, see the video He had a brilliant day and loved every second of it and didn't fall off once He now wants a mountain bike for Christmas. The only downside is that he goes home on Friday which will be gut wrenching but at least he's a few good days

That's great Jay Jumps already ..quick learner then !( couldn't get the vid to play though ) I can tell you are going to miss him ..I know what that's like as I was denied any sort of access to my daughter when I split from her mam ..just because I left ..and even though she wanted to see me ( which I will never forgive ) It took a couple of years and a large legal bill to get things sorted ..but it was hard at the time .. The good thing is that your son has a great time when he is with you ...and you will always be his Dad

The good thing is that your son has a great time when he is with you ...and you will always be his Dad I've changed the video, hopefully you'll be able to see it now. I'm fortunate really where the boy is concerned. His mam has never tried to stop me seeing him. She left shortly after he was born, well when he was about 18 months. Obviously, at the time I just wanted my boy and would have done anything to have him with me rather than with her... We (me and the ex) were squaring up for a right battle but after coming home from seeing my boy one day... I made the hardest decision I've ever made and ever likely to make. That was for letting the ex have custody of the boy without a fight. I had to stand back one day and look at things from my sons eyes. Up there he goes to an award winning school, he lives in a place where they still leave back doors unlocked and kids leave their bikes etc on the front garden, he lives 5 minutes from a beach, has family around him all the time and is breathing fresh air everyday.. Down here, he'd have none of that. He'd see pretty much just me and my mum, the rest of my family is a bit shit.. He'd be breathing fumes rather than fresh air, he'd have to lock everything up and travel over an hour to get to a beach. As hard as it was/is, I know I made the right decision and don't regret it.

Yeah ..I respect that . I walked away with nothing ..just clothes and a few personal possessions having already decided that she was better off where she was .at least in terms of housing and least disruption...just wanted to be away from her mam . I only wanted to see her whenever it was possible but was denied purely out of spite As long as you have some contact and access ..one day they are old enough to make their own decisions .. Really glad you've had a good time ...

The proud feeling never stops. My 15 yr old lad came out with me the other evening and it's the best feeling watching them enjoy something you do.

We went out again yesterday and he had a bit of a tumble. Nothing bad but we had a few tears but, he got straight back on his bike and did this sort of thing He didn't fall whilst learning to jump funnily enough, he fell just riding along a dirt track.. Not watching where he was going! We did the first two sections of Follow the Dog and then had to take his bike back to the shop. I think it's safe to say he's hooked. He wants a mountain bike for Christmas now. The fat bike is a no no for him but he'll definitely be getting proper gears instead of those stupid twist grip things.

The photo above is very impressive for someone with such a short time on the bike.
