OK so I'm possibly going to get some crap from the avid enthusiasts over this thread but I'm old, knackered and on a tight budget.....
What does the crowd think about the Carerra Kraken.... saw it today in my local Halfords and if I'm honest it look like a cracking bike.
Thanks in advance for the replies.
PS. Riding a Carerra Vortice at the moment... yes it is over 20 years old.

It's a fairly popular bike.. A lot of folk rate them fairly highly. Just a shame you can only buy them from Halfords.
Have you looked at the Boardman bikes?

Always gets good reviews. Frames are good quality, only weak point on the reviews seems to be the brakes, but they work and should be a cheap upgrade. See quite of a few of them at trail centres. I think a lot of people are over biked (myself included) you'd be surprised what those things can handle!
As beans said, see if you can get a Boardman bike, they seem to have some pretty decent kit on them.

Looks like Boardman bikes are well out of my price bracket, looks way too much kit for me.... I'm 48 years old, just about managing to cover 30 miles a week on the bike and am looking at something around the 400 pound mark. I'm really liking that Kraken and if it performs as well as my old Carerra Vortice has, I'll be impressed. Saw one in a pearlescent white and it looked real good.... might be tempted if I can talk the missus in to it. Thanks for the BC discount tips. Alan

Carrera bikes perform well for the money. Mines done well over the last year.

I'm sure you'll get on great with the Carrera. Remember the saying 'it's not the bike you ride but how you ride it'.. I for 1 agree completely with that! Don't go thinking that you need to spend £1000's on a bike.. You don't!!!!

Alan ..the first thing to decide before buying a bike is the type of riding you are going to be doing ..if it's going to be very technical off road riding ..you should be thinking along the lines of full sus. ..if it's going to be tow paths and disused railway lines then yep buy a decent hardtail and the kraken would probably suit you fine ..if you are going to be riding quiet country lanes ..buy a road bike ! I personally don't think you can ever be over-biked and you should push your budget to be able to buy the best bike you can within the budget you can afford . At 48 ....you are a mere spring chicken and would be the youngest male in our riding group ..and we are still out there pushing it to the limit ..albeit a lot slower than perhaps we used to ! Don't buy a bike that you may regret buying in a few short months because you want something better..THAT is false economy ...

What about buying 2nd hand, you'd get a better spec bike for your money, and your only going to fall off and scratch it so doesn't matter if it's not perfect. Have a look on pinkbike for an idea of what's around 2nd hand m.pinkbike.com/buysell/?region=5&countryid=193

Friend of mine rides a Vengence, she has a habit of taking on very steep drops an jumps without problem. Ive just resurrected my 2004 kraken. things are well built just make sure you double check the bike before first ride Halfords are not known for their skill in building bikes.

All the Halfords bikes are pretty decent I reckon. I've ridden a Voodoo Hoodoo and it was superb.
