I've been contemplating a new bike for a while but I'm really not sure what to go for . Mid / long travel or even the dreaded 29er . I'm pretty sure that I don't need any more than a 130 travel bike and hopefully it will be easier on the climbs . Anyway , what's your thoughts on this ? Seems well specced for the money whyte.bike/gb/t-130-rs/

Looks good to me, I'm still of the opinion that everyone doesn't need 160+ of travel for most of the riding they do

Absolutely spot on Stu ...I've been overbiked for years on my Nomad ...160 front and back .. The eye opener for me was on a bike at Glentress which had 20 mil less at the front and a whole 35mm at the back ..and handled everything so much better .and from the same manufacturer Mind you I'm no big air junkie !

Looked at the 2015 model in the sale at cycle surgery the other day. Decent spec.

Looks great but I would be looking at the works version from last year for 2400£ with arguably better spec.
I was thinking about these at the same time as the scout. I just thought the scout was a tad more aggro friendly being a bit slacker and 140 or 150mm up front .
I do like whites though and they tend to be built with uk conditions in mind and their warranty is said to be excellent.

I think I'd prefer all the Xt gear too

The Xt drive train is good. also it's good to have the latest model!
As your stereo broke by the way or so you just fancy a change, something slightly more xc/all day bike?

Looks a great bike. My mate got the 905 hardtail and it's a really good ride. I would defo consider Whyte for my next purchase

However there's plenty of people ride them all day every day. Must be fitter then me.

Looks great Ste and you'd still have the stereo for the 'big' stuff - the Whyte looks the perfect trail centre weapon. Found much the same with the Bird, being 140mm travel it seems to like the fast twisty stuff more than the Chief.

If you're worried about a 2015 large being too small, then definitely go for the 2016, as the front centers (so top tube) have been stretched across the whole range. Boost hub spacings front and rear as well, so you'll also get a stiffer bike, with even longer bearing life at the same weight (+- 50g).

T-130 Carbon on the way soon with some very impressive spec for the money, while still keeping the UK back up. But don't say I told you so...

Only got 125mm shock on the scout, did gisburn yesterday with the drops on the hope line, practiced the larger one at the start along with the new drop off start hully gully and didn't bottom out, the ring was near the bottom but didn't quite get off yesterday and it can do. So I would say for General xc rides with mixed terrain and most If not all trail centres 130mm should be plenty enough. Of course more travel is going to cushion the choppy stuff even more but it's more fun really just having enough rather than over kill. Tends to make it feel more poppy as well and helps pumping the trail. That's why I don't think I'll ride the enduro much now as the scout pedals better for longer rides, generally more fun and the smaller size, standover, stack just seems to fit me better. Hence my enduros up for sale again.

I had a quick bounce around on the T-130C large and it felt too small for me, but I'm 6ft 2" and do like long bikes. I'd be on an XL for sure if I got one.

Ouch...and you know what? I genuinely couldn't answer that. For me, I need the Chief and it's 150 mm Pikes and Debonair for the big rides, Wales, Peaks etc. That's because I'm not a very good rider. The extra mm are my 'get out of gaol' card. If you're asking my opinion of you as a rider? then I'd say yes, you would absolutely cope with 130mm travel, but you are the only one that knows the answer to that question
