Having spoken to Dave T earlier in the week this route was suggested ...it's a watered down version of a route that nearly killed the three of us a few years back ( Ian Bell being the other rider ) ..but still a full day out in it's own right ... Starting at the visitors centre at Glentress ..we then completely ignore these trails until later in the day ! Instead we head back down the valley to Traquair ( there is now a trail in place parallel to the road ..?) and pick up the Southern Upland Way to head back to Peebles which incorporates one of the best ridge rides on an old drove road you are likely to find anywhere ..but plenty of climbing to do before you get to this little beauty ... There is a fantastic little tea room in Peebles to have coffee & cake ..before taking the forest back roads to finish off on ( some ) of the trails in Glentress It's a cracking day out and gives the opportunity to see a different side of the Tweed Valley ..which is largely ignored in favour of the trail centres ... Who is coming ?

If I don't get other commitments, but just can't predict at this moment, but probably 75% yes.

That's kind of a " how long is a piece of string " question Kev ... As a rough estimate it's about 30 km ..without doing any of the trails in Glentress ..so in terms of timescale ..no real idea .. I can describe the route from Traquair if you want ..maybe even get up with one or two folk on a Wednesday sometime ..( your day off ? ) I would love to say we could do it on the Sunday ..but the folks in the usual crowd are more suited to a Saturday ...

For the benefit of mainly Kev & Euan ..but anyone else who wants it ..here is a very rough route description ..which you will need the relevant O.S. Map to follow . Start at the trail head at Glentress and then follow this as a nice gentle warm up : www.cyclescottishborders.com/route/tweed-valley-railway-path/At Traquair head for Kirkhouse and follow the Southern upland Way around Fetham Hill over Blakemuir (467m) to the forest edge then through the forest to Blackhouse . At the junction of the forest road turn right following the Douglas Burn for approx 1km to turn right on another forest road for approx 1km to join an easy to miss track on the left ( a Garmin or something similar would be a benefit) ...which takes you to the left of Whiteknowe Head . Follow the track between two hills both called Stake Law ..where the track splits stay right to climb around the side of Birkscairn Hill ( 661m ) ..then start descending to Kirkhope Law , Kailzie Hill on the fantastic cross border drove road down into Peebles . Pass through the town centre on the A72 heading back towards Glentress ..take a turning on the left where you meet the Soonhope Burn and then turn immediately right and follow the fire road as it climbs up into the forest ..from here do whichever GT trails you have the strength left to do ...

Just to put a time on this ..10.00 am start ..and after being a tight arse and suggesting we meet at Cardrona I would concur with Dave that we meet at the main trail head car park at Glentress and start the ride from there .. I have just been to downtown Bell City for some trail goodiesfor today's ride and met Russell who has no internet at the mo ..and he too has said that he is most likely to be there so looks like a good turnout ..
