Variety is where it's at boyo's I'll do trail centres, natural rides over the Long Mynd, road rides, bmx tracks, urban rides......
On Sunday we went on a 50 mile ride on the mountain bikes starting at Dudmaston and following the national cycle route 45 to Bewdley via the Wyre Forrest.
It's been said before but there is nothing quite like road riding for fitness!

Lol My hatred for road bikes is not so much the bikes themselves but ( present company excluded ) the knobs who ride them ..and I know I shouldnt tar everyone with the same brush ..but here is the reason why .. Picture if you will a hot summers day some 20years ago and I'm making my way from Newcastle to Edinburgh in my role as a regional manager driving in my company Mondeo ..windows open when upon coming to the village of Ponteland two roadies are riding abreast taking up the whole of our side of the road .. Thinking that they hadn't heard me and as there was traffic coming towards us I gave them a gentle toot of the horn ( not a blast ) ..couldn't make out what they were saying but I got dogs abuse for daring to have such audacity ..and they refused to get in to a single line . Spotting a gap in the oncoming traffic I took a wide berth and overtook them . A little further on I was unfortunately stopped by traffic lights which allowed them to catch up ..they went either side of the car doors and without warning started to kick each door with the joker on my side gobbing at me through the open window ..I was completely shocked as were most of the pedestrians who happened to witness this as the lights changed I sped off and shock soon turned to anger ..knowing that they would be heading out of the village ..and also knowing the road myself ..I was aware that there was a long straight section which was quiet enough so turning the car back around I pulled into a lay-by and waited . Spotting them approaching and making sure that nothing else was around I accelerated as quickly as I could and when I was a few hundred yards away switched to their side of the road .. God knows what would have happened if they hadn't ditched themselves and their bikes but I truly meant to do them some harm ... I did manage to give them some abuse myself once heading back in the right direction again while they were dusting themselves down ..but to this day the sight of a " peloton " clogging up the road and refusing to budge sets my hair on end and my blood pressure rising ...! Apart from that roadies really are quite splendid chaps ...

Bloody hell Neil! - some story that! Never ever experienced anything like that - all the roadies I've encountered whilst driving have been spot on, it's usually the shitm0ngs driving the cars who are the nobs! Thank feck those pratts dived off the road else you'd still be doing porridge!
Barffy all in fun mate - I do get the fitness thing honest - the one thing I do wish is I could be fitter as I know I'd enjoy my MTB more, I seem to have 'plateaued' fitness wise and am getting no weight off or any quicker up the hills by MTB alone BUT I ain't prepared to risk life and limb duelling with artics on a roadbike, I don't want to be another road death stat - simple as.
and you all look really, really gay as well.

Jebus Neil, can see why you hate them! An yeah I get the not wanting to be near Arctics thing it's just too much of a risk. The route we used at the weekend I would say there were 10-15 cars at most. My local loop is busier but no trucks mainly because the weight limit an that it's narrow. Moto, fitness wise it'll bore the tips off you but just fine a decent hill not too steep an just work out a short loop that takes it in. That an some running up an down fire roads you'll boost your cardiovascular an the hills will build the legs

Cheers Step I do have a plan, tbh. I almost sold my bone shaking S/S rigid but have decided to keep it and over the winter hit the shitty, gloopy miles on it. It is bloody, bloody hard work and not a great deal of fun (I'll be sticking to the blues during the bad weather) which has a few good climbs which on a 32-16 set up with no suspension and massive, draggy tyres will test me out for sure. If that doesn't improve my fitness and drop some pork over the winter - I'll give it up!

Ive got a turbo trainer which is great if the weather is totally bogging out just sit an spin while watching a film or something i scared myself shitlesson the road bike going down stile cop road. I imagine going up and down that a few times would improve fitness! Can be pretty scary bombing down hills its more the speed an how quickly it comes that gets me, then how quickly it goes when you try an go up the other side No need for spitting at any one bloody disgusting Yep as a driver cyclist are my bane in life ... I'm the same ..I will always acknowledge courteous drivers if ( god forbid ) I happen to find myself on a link-up road section ..and will even go to the extent of waving them through as soon as I see that the road is clear ...and ALWAYS when out in a group we shout to each other a warning of a vehicle from behind and if riding abreast immediately move into single file ... Similarly I try to be fair minded when coming upon other cyclists when driving ..most of whom are no problem . What riles me ( bearing in mind I live out in a country setting with lots of winding roads) are the " club" riders ..resplendent in their matching jerseys ..six deep and two abreast who will quite happily sit like that all day ..caring not a jot that other road users are reaching boiling point behind them because they can't get past ..those guys are just total fucking wankers ..completely oblivious or ignorant ..but the first to complain if anything should go wrong .

100% agree Neil. A lad I ride with now and again at work (he's more roadie than MTB so not too often thank feck - he's slower than treacle on the 'down' bits) had is bike thrown over a hedge the other week by a great big farmer bloke in a land rover that he and his lycra mate had been holding up for ages on the lanes, they were riding abreast and he admitted they wouldn't go single file for anyone. He actually was whining about it as if we would sympathise. Thing is it's happened before to him, he obviously doesn't move over or learn. I just said he was lucky he didn't get his head punched!
