Captain stupid here has agreed to do one next weekend, 135km or 83miles in English. It's a road event so I'll be donning my lycra with the rest of them. Never done a long ride like this before an it's has three categorised climbs in it :s anyone have any advise?

So, it's done my god it was harder than I thought! Climbs were all wrong the short 52 mile route had three categorised climbs one topped out at 13% gradient for about 300M pretty much everyone walked them. Venue was OK was an airfield near Silverstone so plenty of parking but the road in the airfield was horrendous loads of people got punctures on it and damaged wheels. I've concluded I'm over geared 11-32 rear, 39-53 front the sprint section I screamed along knocking up 32mph on the flat. Hills not so good pay off for having a compact crankset. Right leg was a pain, literally as it kept cramping up so I ended up doing it in four hours ten. Would I do it again, definitely, but with a slightly smaller gearset. Also there were a group of guys doing it on mountain bikes. An we all took the piss out of the obscenity fit guy using an e-roadbike yes the exist!
Mechanically the bike was superb just the rider let it down.

I'm thinking of changing my gearing as I have a compact too and as you say you fly along until you hit the hills and unless you have very strong legs you're stuffed

Trouble for me is I use sram so need a 110bcd ring

I've done a few 60, 80 and 100 mile sportive's and after the last one decided I needed a new bike as mine was insanely heavy. It weighed something like 29lbs and was massively over geared. Every single ride I would feel fine up to 35 ish miles and hit a cat 4 climb and be dead for the rest of it. I think the lowest gearing was 38-23 and it used to kill me. I traded it in for this little beauty on Saturday which I'm yet to ride, but as it weight around 17.8 lbs I think it will be an improvement!

Not too serious, I just couldn't be bothered spending any money on my old bike and this essentially cost me £250 after selling my old bike. Life is miserable on a heavy over-geared bike haha.

Looks good that im only a smidge lighter at 18.5lbs until I fit the lights an frame bag. The Pro4's arnt a bad tyre either! Oh god it gets worse ...I thought we had voted against all things roadie ... Shhhh, these are "training bikes". Remember the motto, Winter miles equal summer smiles

I'm going to be running out of 'disgusted/WTF' gifs at this rate. Why can't you have a S/S rigid as a winter hack like me? all this is just an excuse to put lycra on if you ask me. THAT'S the real reason you've lost weight - to look good with all the other lycra boys - stood outside the cafe with your latte's on a Sunday morning
