ah the old calf.yes it is a bit of an incline that one  great route tho apart from the none descript bit as you head back towards .....er forget the name of the village/pub where we met up with hodgy? we took a few wrong turns and the track became vague for a while. |

What's the problem Al ?
After doing the ride 3 times now and knowing what a bitch the climb to The Calf is ..what you have to do is jam your rear mech into your back wheel within 20 yards of leaving the car park ..spend the next few hours heading over to Staveley in the hope that a friendly bike shop can replace / fix it on the spot ...then rejoin the ride half way around at Ravenstonedale, enjoying a nice pot of tea while waiting for the rest of your mates to arrive ...simples ..I've got this off to a fine art now !

Where were you when we did this as a forum ride a few months back ...I could have pointed you in the right direction ..and saved you a lot of heartache ( lol ).
Is that vid meant to be of The Calf ?
All I can view is something to do with Red Bull Rampage ...

It was good crack as always, but too much of a slog for too little reward. Over hyped I reckon. I wouldn't do it again |

Good job he had nowt bad to say about the company he was with Stu ...
So you didn't really rate it ?
I think it's one of those rides where you have to be lucky with the ground conditions to get the most out of it ..it's best as a summer ride or at least after a dry spell...

Just played the vid ..the end tickled me ..it is one of those descents where you can't take you're eyes off the trail for even a second as it will catch you out ..I did think your line choice was good though up to that point .and didn't really see what went wrong ..

The really funny thing is we have met before, only a couple of weeks ago at the Hamsterley TT and apparently a couple of times before that. Blissfully unaware that was who he was. |

Lol no problem Al, my username doesn't really give much away. My legs were a little stiff yesterday which is not surprising really No I didn't really rate it at all Neil, the decent from the calf was good initially but then just became a bit meh as it started to flatten out. Stunning place to ride though. The best bit I thought was the ride back from ravenstonedale to sedbergh but by that point my legs had had enough haha The elevation profile from strava shows you how much of a killer the first climb is  |

Well you are not alone in your assesment Stu as there are a few of us who also think the second half is the best part of the ride ...
I like the descent down Bowderdale ..but it rode a helluva lot better the first time ....it has unfortunately eroded over the intervening years ..with more use due to the sport we participate in becoming ever more popular ...

The calf descent was pretty good, the singletrack is good but a bit of a drag. The stuff after the crazy toad climb was all good, the bit through the woods was fantastic and some of the narrow stuff crossing back to sedbergh although not steep was nice.
