Today's ride was a fairly short loop from settle over to Malham Tarn. I was that busy trying to keep traction up a steep climb over limestone steps and rocks that I didn't noticed I had left the marked route on my Garmin a couple of miles back, the track looked promising so I just kept going. Unfortunately it cut 8 or 9 miles off the intended route. The climb from Settle up and over stockdale lane was brutal, I'm sure the loop would be better the opposite direction. Nearly 5 miles of pretty steep climbing along the Pennine bridle way and then stockdale lane put me at the top of a juicy descent towards malham cove. Unfortunately this was one of only three worthwhile downhill sections but with views of Malham cove, tarn and the reservoir it was just about worth it. I considered stopping off at Gisburn trails on the way back but saw sense and went home for a shower and brew before the school run. stopping towards the end of the descent from stockdale lane towards malham cove. other pictures of tremendous lime stone features which the area is renowned for at the link below. s1049.photobucket.com/user/kirky72/settle%20to%20malham/story

I try to do mate. I'm feeling g a bit mad at the moment as I was going to go out thus morning and the weathers nice, but the mrs talked me I to going to a neighbours house party last night against my better judgement. I can totally abstain and haven't had a drink since July but really struggle with taking it easy. So we rolled home (two doors down) at 4am and I've got the hangover from hell and still in bed.
Excellent party mind.

I usually do that loop clockwise , go up the west side and then over to the tarn , nasty slog out of malham but you then descend Stockdale and that's a hoot

Cheers Matthews, I often get the feeling I'm doing a loop the wrong way but more so then usual with this one even though I was following somebody's route. Stock dale lane from the summit must be a cracking descent but wht do you do at the end it would seem a shme to cruise down those lanes for the final descent into settle.
When I got over near malham cove I though of taking on of the trails over above and behind it but then thought bettered it in case it left an horrible climb back up. Is there any good stuff over that wy that you know.
Are you local to that area? I've got a book of supposedly great rides over the mas tiles road, kilnsey, pen y gent and many others to work through. If you fancy getting lost together sometime let me know.

Great riding in that area ...

We should sort a mid week Yorkshire dales ride out when I'm back, most of them are good for all weather conditions. Although I much prefer it dry and not too windy.

Russell & Ian Bell are heading down to do a ride out of Grassington on Thursday ..the one that's just been featured in MBR ...had the invite but that's the one that would break the camels back (I was a little premature with regard to the knee being ok ! ) ..if you didn't already !

Ha see what you did there.
I didn't notice that ride in mtbr yet. I've saved this months to read on the plane tomorrow, I'm off to see Humphrey again.
I would have loved to join Russell and co around Grassington, hopefully they let around those parts again in November or December.

We usually climb up to above Langcliffe , then go over Gorbeck road , then cut over to the southern Tarn carpark , then across the south sde of tarn and back to the start of mastilles , drop down into Malham for food and then the shitty climb back up , the lanes after Stockdale can be quite interesting at 40+mph on nobblies , do a facebook search on retrobike yorkshire and north and you can then see what I get up to (that's who I ride with normally or solo) we tend to put one ride a month on and don't turn our noses up at modern interlopers
