What kind of training would you do though? I already ride a minimum of 3 times a week - average about 20 miles a ride?......

Yes my mates finished the same time as me and didn't even have a mechanical issue between us.
Zulu, with regards training i would just make sure you increase one of your rides to 30m during the week just to get used to the extra time on the bike but fitness wise you should be fine plus I would go to Long Mynd and try some proper hills rather than just Cannock. The longest climb was 8k quite gradual and constant. The last climb was 2k but higher up. I find the main issue is the terrain so its difficult to get into a constant rythm. Plus it's not a race to we averaged 12kph, top speed was 49k and that was on a gravelly fire road and I had forgotten to let the pressure down on my tyres (45 to 50psi for road riding) which made the corners fairly interesting!

Cheers mate I'll give this a goo next year - I'll be 53 then so just to take part in and finish will be an achievement for me.

He does a little less riding than you do currently. the only thing that got him was the length of the hills he wasn't used to and using a hardtail on the descents it had work in Brecon. This year was my first time with a FS and it was soooo more comfortable than last time.
