So the light arrived yesterday after ordering it on Friday. First impressions were good and bear in mind I have only had cheap chinese ebay lights, which i have found to be very good but the batteries don't last as long and I hate charging them in my house TBH. www.magicshineuk.co.uk/featured-products/magicshine-eagle-m2-2400-lumen-bike-light-2016-model.html
It was packaged well with clear instructions. In the box you get light head, battery, remote control, charger, selection of straps for attaching it to the bike and instruction book. The cable from the battery to the light is not very long which I thought may be an issue but actually I strapped the battery to the top tube and it felt very secure and the cable is far more robust than others i've seen. I really like the fact that the straps are rubber with buckle type grips rather than just velcro, I reckon I could pick the bike up by holding the battery only! The light head itself seems well made and is very light (unlike the battery but it is more powerful than my previous ones). The connectors for the battery to light and very sturdy, in fact quite difficult to push together and undo but will probably loosen.
The light itself has 3 modes of High / Medium / Low but where it gets confusing is there are 5 intensity levels for each mode! Plus it has a light meter showing the power level dropping as you go. It also has 2 small orange lights for traffic to see from the side but not convinced a driver would see it at speed. I have to be honest for the first 20 minutes of my ride I was finding all the different choices a pain in the arse, however, i soon got used to it. As I was only on the road last night I mainly used the medium setting and toggled between low intensity to high depending on speed and if cars were coming. As for the remote control I did think this was something i wouldn't use but for the first try i stuck it on the bars to give it a go and actually I loved being able to adjust the light power with my thumb. It did make my handle bars look more like space control centre than an MTB.
As for the light itself, well it is better than the chinese jobies. The low and medium beams give a mixture on near and far patterns and obviously the high gives both. Apparently the high beam will last on full for 2 hours and by the looks of it will be awesome on the trail. I found the light beam to be more solid / less shadows. As i was just on the road I mainly used the medium setting and toggled between 1 to 5 intensity and according to the light meter i still have a full battery after an hour and 15 mins riding, which is pretty impressive. I reckon on this setting I could get about 10 hours riding without re charging.
Overall, I am very happy with my purchase £90 and I am looking at getting the www.magicshineuk.co.uk/bike-lights/front-bike-lights/magicshine-mj-900-front-bike-light.html to go on my helmet.
I will add some photo's of the light in a few minutes from my phone but I don't have any of the light beam as it was freezing and raining last night and didn't want to stop!
