For the new built I was thinking about keeping the previous setup I had on the HT with 180 at the front and 160 on the rear...mainly because most of the braking comes from the front, not add anymore weight (albeit very marginal) and a cleaner look. However I'm starting to question if I should also go 180 rear!? What do you wonderful people think?

Just keep it the same mate, i have the 180/160 combo and i ride some pretty steep techy stuff and never feel the need to have a bigger rotor out back

180/160 is fine for most stuff unless your doing some gravity work. Be less faff as well as you already have the parts.

180/160 works for me, no problem stopping or locking up the rear wheel.

Looking at keeping 180/160 when I build the mega up. Seems to work ok on my HT.

I had 160/160 on my HT, now I'm on the bigger, heavier FS, I've got 180/180 I ride everything, you obviously can't notice the extra weight, but the brake feels good, especially when on the downhill trails ? the rotor is bigger than the cassette too which looks sick IMO

I run 180 front and rear, have done for a few years now I like the amount of stopping power it gives me.

180 F/R. I did have 200, but new forks and lacking the required adapter means I'm on those. Soon though, maybe on a new build!

180/180 works for me. I find the brake pad compound makes the biggest different, I'm a big fan of the Uberbike race matrix pads.

I might try them next then. Fed up with S/Star shite. Same they dont seem to last long plus if they get a even a bit of bike cleaning stuff on them they become crap

How does disk size effect pad wear?
Does a smaller disk wear the pads down faster or the other way round. I seem to be going though pads like crazy at the minute ( probably due to peaks grit and muddy conditions)

It doesnt really, just the SS pads seem to be garbage, im running the kevlars same as Malamute, they are good to start then just go to pot. ive a set that got wet now squeal all the time an brake really poorly. I dont think ive managed to wear a set down because ive binned them off from either no longer stopping or squealing all the time.

If you think about it, a bigger rotor will in theory give you less pad wear since it will technically be cooler than a smaller rotor under heavy breaking...does this make sense!?...but I trust the differences are very minimal! Obviously the main thing about pad wear is their type...the XTR brakes come with metal and they last a good 6-8 months for me.

That's way too quick I think...try Uberbike metal ones next time maybe? I always go through the fronts faster than the rears...like on a motorbike the majority of the breaking is handled from the front and rear is mostly to balance and complement.
