Not being in possession of a vernier measuring thingummybob - how long would you run the same rotors? I'm a fat get and a pussy so mine get used a lot - into the 2nd year with em now - time to change or get a proper measurer and find out. Is it 1.5mm minimum thickness, or summat?

Guess no one really knows Zulu . I have found out I need new rotors though since upgrading my deores to slx. Apparently shimano do a 'wide' rotor for the deores and all their other brakes take a 'narrow' rotor.

I've only ever replaced one rotor due to it being severely dented ...that's one in seven years !

I had to replace the rotors on the cube after 2 years but that was due to contamination rather than wear. If they are still smooth and stopping you then they are fine imo

Only replaced one under warranty after cooking it. generally they will be like car brake discs replace when thickness goes to x number of millimeters, so depends how hard an much you ride.
Also count in warping, scoring, bending or not matching the bike.

Good way to test them is spin the wheel as fast as you can, then stick your finger in it... If your pinky gets chopped off as it passes into the caliper, shes still sharp enough and wont need replacing just yet...

Just gone through my second ice tec in a year, it had worn that thin the outer stainless braking surface began to peel away like tin foil. Still rate them as top notch stoppers though

Macky, I was looking at ice tech, but then saw a lot of people having the same issue as you. I know you ride a lot, but no way should you be getting through 2 rotors in a year. I'll probably go for the normal XT rotors, which seem to last much better. As for your comment Marmite, mincing around on a road bike in lycra doesn't count, so you can feck right off.

If you want a true wear reading you need to use a micrometer..vernier gague gives a false reading as the worn disc will have a lip,which the vernier will measure. A mic wil measure the worn part. ie car disc when you change the pads..you will have a lip on the outer edge. the disc will usually have a min thickness stamped or etched on them..
the shimano ice discs have a small wear limit due to layers..

I just run the regular xt ones, i probably get 2-3000 miles out of them at least, and thats running cheap superstar sintered pads on large (200 and 180mm) rotors. They wear in an hour glass sort of shape across the brake track, i called time on them when the difference between the outside/inside of the track was about half a mm deeper than the middle, as it was wearing my pads unevenly and became hard to prevent them rubbing.

I'm going for the XT rotors too, as to replace the Formula ones on the bike is piss take expensive.

The finned rotors are excellent... From Shimano... Not some cheap shitty company that only sells a lot cause it offers all things in pretty colours for pennies!..

i got the Uberbike Kevlar pads...good prices and their products look and feel quality, rotors included. not had Uber pads, but if they're as good as Superstar, i'd rather use my Ballbag between the tyre and reflector to slow me down... and yes i do have experience... of the poor quality, and braking method!!
