..as he wanted details ...but equally for anyone else ! No date on this but best done in the summer months when the heather's out and the bracken is high.. Getting there for most involves the A19 to Thirsk then following the A170 through Kirkbymoorside and branching off on a minor road to Lastingham. Parking is limited due to the narrow road ..try up near the hotel . The ride starts by heading east out of the village for approx 1.4 km to a T-junction where we turn left. After a few hundred metres the Tarmac gives way to a rough track stay right where it splits to go to High Askew where we pick up a b/w which contours around the hillside above the river Seven ...all the way to Hollins Farm . ( this is fantastic singletrack ..a personal fav ...anywhere!) From Hollins Farm follow the track to the road and turn right to drop steeply into Rosedale Abbey...passing through the village on the road to Low Bell End ( love it ! ) staying left where the road splits to climb through School Row to Hill Cotts ...looking for a b/w on the right . Taking this b/w on a track that climbs steeply turn off left after only 150m onto the old mining railway track (dis-used ) that is shown as a black dash on the map..to follow this all the way to the top and around the head of the valley . Although this is a good well surfaced track ..it's a whole lot more entertaining than you might think ..a mix of single & doubletrack with loads of " features " along the way to play on ! Upon turning at the valley head be sure to stay on what is marked as doubletrack on the map ( do not drop down towards Overend farm ) for a fast blast all the way to the road just past Bank Top. At the road cross straight over to Ana Cross ( track marked with a black dash on map ) ..Stop here for group photo ! Take the right hand track from the cross it's a hollow-way sunken track which becomes a b/w as it passes between Barker Slack and Tranmire Plain to give a nice drop back into Lastingham . I have already told Glynn that while best kept as a summer ride ..if anyone is going to do this anytime soon ..don't leave me out if at all possible ...it's probably one of my favourite rides ! Most of this route can be found on O.S Landranger Map 100 Malton & Pickering ...with only the very head of the valley on the mining trail track being missed ( so not worth buying the connecting sheet ) m.geograph.org.uk/photo/76766

Just to say also ..I think I said on the Osmotherly thread that I had never ridden in Cropton Forest ..which isn't strictly true as I took in the North Eastern edge of the forest from Levisham Station on a forum ride out of Goathland last year ..exiting out over Simon Howe Rigg ... But that couldn't be incorporated into this !

If it's a summer ride (ie outside of the footy season) and I'm not working - I fancy another trip north. I'll keep me eyes on this for a date etc. As long as I'm where I want to be with fitness and this bastard IBS it'd be good to travel somewhere again.

Now looking at then pics again it's normal dark when I drive past that .. But looking at it very smart if I remember that use to be an old car park for the town hall ? Exactly...it used to be a sea of empty tarmac...and the existing Annex building was on its way to being derelict very soon, now fully refurbished...the image you see of the inside dining, used to be the dirty, damp and dark rear of the building towards the carpark. A great 8 million pound investment in the town, now just needs students to use it...to bring this thread back to something remotely to do with bike...one of the rooms on the ground floor is a Performance and Monitoring Biomedical Suite...and they have one of those cool/expensive Watt bikes and treadmills, amongst other gear to monitor athletes...its proper cool! Wish i was a kid in Burton since i would know exactly where i would study!? Anyway, you now "know" the numpty who designed and "built" it!

Nah sorry mate - the gothic building in the first pic is a fine example - but you obviously don't appreciate the art deco example of the last.. now to me, that should be a protected building! In years to come buildings like this will be sadly missed.

All feedback is always positive...you obviously understand about architecture since you recognised it was Art Deco too (because it was linked to the adjacent Town Hall it is a listed building...so "protected" as you say which caused me some level of pain with English Heritage). But the idea was to do a simple extension paying tribute to the nice Art deco building, in its details, proportions, rhythms, etc. No offence taken...architecture is one of the most subjective things. the good thing about that little area, is that you have some really nice buildings, of different generations/movements...its like a progression, and i think the latest one is a great one, of THIS time... Back to bikes...we can discuss architecture when we meet eventually!?

It is indeed and the new build is a fine looking building and it does work...just got a bit of a soft spot for buildings from the early part of the 20th century (20's and 30's especially) as they aren't often cherished enough and will be gone if we aren't careful.

Don't we all...? but we can't really build buildings like that anymore...because people can't, don't know how too, can't be bothered to build them properly or simply don't have the time and/or money...in a few years, ill be glad if we have good enough site managers who understand about putting a building together and good brickies!? If this project didn't happen, the Annex Art Deco building was on its way very rapidly...amongst many other things, we replaced all the windows, all the lintels and cills, cleaned and repaired all the brickwork and stonework, etc, etc. The Town Hall alone is a great building and the local authority should have stayed there rather than moving a few yards along the road to an awful building...these days its almost empty...i wonder what will happen in a few years.
