Yes, it's a shame and I know I'm a bit of a dinosaur - but when I see a really well maintained Art Deco structure it's a proper thing of beauty to me - it was a golden age of architecture, imo, but yeah, it's like wanting Roman temples and civic buildings back I suppose, just not gonna happen so let's look after what is left.
Have you ever been to Celebration in Florida? built by Walt Disney in the 50's as a tribute to the 20's and 30's? It's a living town but built to strict 30's style - it's a fantastic place and people queue for years to own a house there, it's even got Model T's and other cars of the period maintained and just parked at the kerbs..what a place. It's not a theme park though people live there - Mr Disney was a true visionary...

Should you ever visit the tiny hamlet of Newcastle ..make sure you take a walk up and down Grey Street ...you will cream your panties as there is some of the finest architecture anywhere in this country . Mind you if you were to have a drink in each bar on the way down ..you wouldn't be able to walk back up !

It is indeed and the new build is a fine looking building and it does work...just got a bit of a soft spot for buildings from the early part of the 20th century (20's and 30's especially) as they aren't often cherished enough and will be gone if we aren't careful. Don't we all...? but we can't really build buildings like that anymore...because people can't, don't know how too, can't be bothered to build them properly or simply don't have the time and/or money...in a few years, ill be glad if we have good enough site managers who understand about putting a building together and good brickies!? If this project didn't happen, the Annex Art Deco building was on its way very rapidly...amongst many other things, we replaced all the windows, all the lintels and cills, cleaned and repaired all the brickwork and stonework, etc, etc. Some one that deliver to sites for the last 20plus years I've seen things change so fast .. Bricks are dieing now the company I work for we've shut and close prolbly over 10/20 block and brick factory's not cost effective and cheaper to build with other materials . how thermailte plants that use the old ash from the power stations can't get it as they are all closing down ( we gets ours from rudgeley) we was gearing up for 2020 when there were all meant to be going off line hahha bring it from the other side of Europe Crazy i use to drive for red banks that use to make chimney pots the old fashion way but most of that skill has gone and it won't be long before that factory is shut down as well in meaham hanson sold us off to Forterra now well that's what we are called .. Still a billon pound business .. But for how much longer hmm .. Any my way cracking job and I've got to say I do like the new build

Shame that Gaz and as someone who did his City and Guilds as a bricklayer - it's a bloody shame and it really is a dying art!

I've been to Newcastle before and won some competitions there that unfortunately never got the money in the end to go forward...and yes, i know the town has great buildings there...really nice! My practice did the King's Gate University buildings at Barras Bridge...with the huge glass front with louvres (horizontal blades) and cladded in sandstone. www.flickr.com/photos/yellowbookltd/11238923226

Impressive - all glass and steel but I understand that's how it is now.

I also like modern buildings..and there's a great mix in Newcastle ..the nice thing too is that a lot of old beautiful looking buildings have had new life breathed into them ( around the Central Station area ) Very impressive rlo ..

Think I've got a bit of Prince Charles in me ... ...all I see is glass and steel whilst admiring the design at the same time, tbf. Where modern buildings win is once you are inside them...light and space used beautifully... but the outside just ain't for me.

Not even sure that's a real photo or a render...no matter which, it's massively photoshopped!

Think it's a genuine shot from the 30's/40's? I may be wrong but I don't think it's photoshopped - just a bloody good photographer? Sure even back then photo's as good as this were possible - of course the building itself helps.. Anyway I've already over extended myself - I'm not getting into an argument about architecture with a pro! I just know what I find appealing and what I don't.
