Found a nice compromise today to balance a family day, walking the dog etc and a sneaky ride. I suggested we look around the park, cafés and shops of Settle which the mrs was happy with. While they did that I had a quick ride around the settle loop, I've done it once before so opted to do it in the opposite direction to finish with a good descent down stock dale road. Good ride, not amazing although the scenery is. the last climb. To stockdale lane was a killer, very steep and rocky to start and then a steep field climb and the top surface was just cutting up making it a real slog. some pics. the climb to stockdale lane. The views half way up weren't bad, looking back down towards Malham cove. Good enough reason for a breather. malham cove Malham tarn. Some interesting looking geology, there's a trail right through it but it's a footpath and there were loads of walkers about today. a few more for those that like looking at pictures of limestone outcrops and sheepshit. s1049.photobucket.com/user/kirky72/settle%20to%20malham/story

Really nice pics John ..there are loads of variations riding in that area..me and the missus had a great stay in Kettlewell more years ago than I care to remember and I have done a bit of riding around there (Settle , Malham Mastiles Lane etc . ) Gotta love that exposed Limestone in the wet ( not !) ...slippery as an eel skin.

I'm only just starting to explore the area to be honest, some parts are a little sanitised, once I get the general gist and sense of direction I'll start to try some other trails as I expect my guide book makes the best of the official stuff.
Trails on my list to do in the very near future.
Gargrave, mastiles lane, Kilnsey, hetton. Horton, horse head and Fox up, (tour pen y gent) at least three variations to choose from. Saving this one for better weather. Pately bridge north west Pately bridge and appletreewick Grassington, mastiles, hetton.

Some good rides on that list ..you are also only a couple of hours away from the NYM ..so don't forget that area ..it's a close call but I think I prefer the moors to the dales ...

I'll venture up there at some point, most likely when some bodies guiding☺
Once or if I find a belting route in the dales I will be happy to stick it up as a group ride.im hopeful that the pen y gent combines with the best bits around Clapham would be worth a trip from most directions.

Usually do that ride in the clockwise direction , have dinner in Malham but it's a bugger of a climb back out of Malham

nice pics john. one of the mtb marathon series started from kilnsey and routed west from there.there was alot of long climbs and not alot of technical descents, but i put that down to the route chosen for H&S reasons rather than lack of technicality in the area.

Usually do that ride in the clockwise direction , have dinner in Malham but it's a bugger of a climb back out of Malham I did it clockwise this time as I thought the stockdale lane descent to settle is better than the one that cuts across the crest of the hill and through the fields, it probably is slightly better and however the descent from Langcliffe gate down to the main road after you've climbed stockdale lane going anti clockwise is a good one, fast down the fields and then more technical at the bottom. how do you get down to malham by the way, I noticed a path that went off under the limestone cragg at malham tarn. Or there's ancient looking foot path that dissects the gorge down towards malham cover but looks a bit naughty with some many parties of walkers coming up.

When you drop down from Langcliffe with Grizedales on your right you get to the road out of Malham , just to your left is a bridle that cuts across towards the tarn , follow this to the Tarn at the next road, straight through the carpark to the tarn , you can then turn back on yourself by the wooded bit and follow tarmac track back towards Malham and Mastiles lane , just follow the yellow road down into Malham .
