Just got back from an awesome week away with work in north wales mountain biking. We covered about 90km in total over the week and my legs are paying for it today. Amazing fun and gained lots of confidence and extra skills. We rode: Day 1: Marin Trail - I enjoyed this but I felt there was alot of climbing with not much reward. There was some good sections though Day 2: Llandegla Red with Black bits. Had great fun here amazing trail with lots of good features. The Northshore dirt jump bit was great fun. Awesome Cafe too Day 3: Penmachno trail: Not many have heard of this but its a really great technical trail. Most of the fast bits are narrow single track no more than a foot wide. Some great sections. Very wet though as its on river tracks. Was a trail you had to concentrate extra hard on lines etc otherwise your off down a steep drop Day 4: Coed y Brenin: We used this as a leg saver so we only did the blue trail and the red fox trail. Spent alot of time on the newly opened skills area fine tuning our skills and learning tips etc. Day 5: A little 20 minute race for fun around a section of the marin trail. Had a great week. And my bike didnt skip a beat. Ive recently had brand new Shimano XT Brakes and they were brilliant very powerful and great modulation. Just thought id share my experiences. Phil

Serious question. Do the army use mountain bikes or is it a fitness thing

Sounds like an awesome weekend, I love Penmachno, coed you brenin and degla!!! There's another trail up by coed y brenin called the cli machx trail, it's just outside Machynlleth and it's pretty awesome to. It reminds me a lot of Penmachno, but there is a lot of up hill fire road, totally worth the climbs though as that final decent is amazing and soooo long. No toilets or cafe though and it could do with being a little longer.

Sounds fantastic Phil... You mentioned almost word for word how Dave & Jean from our local group described the Penmachno trails after their visit a couple of years back ...

What reg you in? Im in the REME mate. Canada is great fun I was over their for 8 months last year It was mainly a fitness thing to train people to see if we can get a team together I didnt like degla the first time I went but it was in gale force winds and sideways rain and we only did the red route. The black sections make that trail so much fun and very fast we had much better weather too

Brilliant, I am off to North Wales in a couple of weeks, staying in a cottage just off the Marin Trail. Looking forward to riding it again. There is a lot of climbing, but the views and descents do make it worth it. Penmachno is a little gem of ride, I've ridden it twice, once in the rain and once dry. Each time it was great fun. When I lived in North Wales, Llandegla was a 5 min drive from my house and I really miss that place. The red/black trails were awesome and really improved my riding skills.
I've not ridden Coed y Brenin - is it worth the trip out?

Cyb is definitely worth strip if you are not so far. Despite the size of the crowds there the better trails like beast or mbr are very quiet when you get I to them as the family groups and more casual riders are on the blues.
To be honest the mbr has most of the best bits of the beast so I would recommend doing that and then as you like Penmancho I'd have a brew, some cake and the oldest trail that has some funny name it starts from the main visitor centre but crosses the road and uses the opposite valley, it's a long dull climb to the top but then there are lots of good more natural feeling trails heading down. An hour and half roughly for each.

I has some good sections, especially pins and needles.

Went to CYB once and wasn't that impressed tbh - did the Dragon's Back and it just felt like climb after fire road climb. Perhaps I ought to give it another go.

Yeah I didn't feel the love on dragons back, I thought it was a lot of fire road ups that didn't make up for the downs. I like mbr and the black bull though and they are worth another visit.

By Thursday when we went to CyB my legs were so fatigued so we did the blue and the Red Fox I think its called.
I would of loved to do the MBR but I didnt have the energy.
A few of the lads rode MBR and said it was an awesome trail. I'd love to go there fresh and try it out.
