Two recovering perpetual cold victims, myself and Mike, rode out from Marsden station this morning around Meltham way with the main aim of Climbing up to Wessenden to drop back via the tremendous 2.6 mile roller coaster descent back to Marsden. We did a variant on the ride to miss along road climb and instead climbed a long stretch of rutted singletrack that was heavy going in places today but should be good in summer in either direction. there was a couple of decent bits along the way but the main draw is the descent me time I do it I'll get a go pro clip as it's a gem. thanks for showing us Mike. a few pics. it was a bit misty today so you can't quite make it out but this is the start of the long Wessenden descent taken through the handily placed picture frame, the descent contours around the right of reservoir hugging the side of the valley, it's not all down with a few sharp climbs craftily placed after steep cobbled descents. unfortunately we came across a couple of groups of walkers otherwise I may have improved on my 4th quickest of the year time. For sure next time! without the novelty frame, the valley forks off to the right, 2.5 miles later it finishes on the outskirts of Marsden handily placed for a brew in the station pub. No pics on the way down, too much fun to stop. Can't say I noticed the scenery. chance for one pic of Mike at the end of the descent as Singletrack turns back into service road/track near the reservoir damn. I'm sure if you could make out the facial feature Mike would have a big grin on his face, unless he's too busy panting. its a lung busting descent as there's also many pedally bits if you want to hammer it. I was more knackered at the end of this section then the days longest climbs. part way up the long climb up from Meltham. nearly there now. finally crested the hill for the shortest descent to an extra loop, can't remember the name. The snow was still clinging onto the Peak District side.

It stayed dry for us but the trails were wet in places.
Have you ridden around there Glynn, I think you'd love the final descent. I'll have to show you sometime.

I'm no expert Glynn, first ride there today, but this route is worth it for the final descent alone. There's some bridle ways short drops and long techy climbs as well.

Mike I got to the bottom of those grinding noises after I cleaned the bike. I though I had dirty or maybe a bent rotor however I seemed to have developed a similar piston problem to what you had one pad was half worn the other which was returning properly didn't have a smidgen of pad left, down to the backer plate, so that explains the brake rub noises.
As I had the wheel off I gave the rear mech a good clean and found that the bottom jockey wheel was ready to drop off, it was out of dish to the metal inner and running around it in an oval arc as a result a couple of teeth were like thin spikes and others worn down, so swapped it out with a jockey wheel from a bent deralliur that I had luckily they seem to be universal and the spare was from an sram going on my shimano slx no problem.
Glad I noticed both things before the next ride or I would have had no rear brake and the jockey wheel ready to give up the ghost, in fact it as probably only the chain tension that was keeping it together.

Part of your route is off the Colne Valley challenge that i do, we climb up the reservoirs at Wessenden then do a left at the top down about a mile then left onto another bridleway, cracking place to ride.

I think i prefer going down the reservoirs then up that way, however the narrow bridleway that runs from the top road all the way down to meltham would be excellent.

Yeah i wouldn't mind going down them too, on last years raceday there was a killer headwind going up so i just tucked in behind someone and plodded along in his slipstream whilst he took the brunt of the wind haha

got to get round to cleaning mine yet john. i watched the rugby then sorted myself out to be in work for 06:00 this morning so that awaits me when i get home. glad to show you round it is definitely worth the trip up there. think we need to head over the other side next time and try to loop back round the wessenden for the descent. Glynn you do need to do a bit of research up there and the bridelways do need to be linked by road at times. there are some good bits and i have seen that you can come into wessenden halfway down from the pennine way which is all old slab riding i think. it is actually as far there though as it is to sout lakes for me at Preston but definitely worth the trip.
got to say it is great being a northern git and living in lancashire, either from home or within an hour you get shit loads of good riding of all variations and no shandy with fairy liquid head on it either.

Enjoyed reading about your ride there Mike ..but obviously you made a bit of a typing error ....the bit where you said it's great being a northern git ... Almost correct but as I've told Kirky before ..you are southern -northern True north lies in the county of the same name ....NORTHumberland Now before the tartan brigade start twirling their kilts ..I'm talking about England here ... Big hahaha's

Lets discuss it at gisburn if you are going if not I will post some dates on here. In roundies back yard as well so it would be good to go when he can get out. I am sure john would be up for it again as well.

Lads I would do it after it's been dry for a while and climb up through the res and do the rocky broken road loop down a long singletrack descent to Meltham (was a long muddy climb last time we did it the opposite way) and climb back up ten bridle ways/lane and back down the long red descent.
