Question, about to treat the Chief to a new drivetrain - thing is I normally just measure/count the links on the old chain and then cut the new one to suit.
Thing is I've been told that a 32t oval is equivalent to a 30t 'normal' ring - so will I get away with the same method? or do I have to go through the PITA rigmarole of dropping the air out of the shock and measuring from scratch?

What are you replacing it with, it still has 32t so still had the same chain wrap as a normal 32t, 2t is like one link though so unless your chain was super tight before I would try it as the same length first . The other factor is that you set the chain length at the largest cogs back and front at full sag for a full suss but how likely are you bottom out the shock when you are in the pussy cog.

Cheers Kirky, I do worry about this kind of stuff. At the moment, I have a normal 30t chain ring, I'm replacing it with a 32 oval.

From what i heard...a 32T oval...is like a 34T on the most powerful part of the stroke and a 30T on the hardest part...sorry if it complicates things... i believe you should measure the chain as if it was a 32T round anyway. The rest is taken by the mech...wish i had done that too. When my new OneUp NW goes, ill be straight onto an oval.

Yeah, looks like I'll err on the side of safety, I'll measure it properly.

Why not just try it with your current chain and see. If it looks tight just use a couple of extra links when you swap the chain over.

Nah when it comes to chain wrap 32t is 32t the circumference is the same for the oval or circular.

So...anyway...the time is nearly here to put it all together - so should I just add one link to the length of chain that was on the 30t? one link should be enough for a 32t oval...yes? Oh feck it I'm going to have to measure proper, ain't I?

Just add one link if it wasn't super tight before, if it was pretty tight as in the mech was as far forward as you would like when on the largest sprocket then add two.

Cheers Paul - yeah I'll go with one link as it wasn't super tight on the 30 - don't you start on the tyre pressures
