Those that were out on the ride at Glentress know that I get really sore knuckles after doing a bit of riding. They are very sore today as well. It's in every knuckle down each finger, thumbs are ok though. It almost feels like the knuckles are swollen today so bending them is causing pressure. My question to the forum is, has anyone ever experienced this or know of anyone that has? And how did you / they try to sort it? At the moment all I can think of is using some fat grips on the bars as I have ODI grips at the moment and they are quite skinny.

Sorry to hear that mate! I had some problems before too...not exactly the same but still! My first suggestion is, bike setup and tweaking things a bit, saddle position and angle as well as bars. Have you done that basic setup test of the elbow on the tip of the saddle and your middle finger should get around middle of your stem!? That helped me a lot not too be too stretched or too over the bars which puts different pressures on your hands. Also, I used to have some ODI SDG Hansolo grips which were very grippy but thin and used to give me a lot of pins and needles...changed them to ODI Rogue which are much thicker and softer and tha help a lot. Even though they don't look very nice those Ergo grips are so supportive and comfortable...

I get this when using a jack hammer or a lot of lump hammering.. i also get it a bit if i grip the bars too tight..
all i can suggest is losen your grip a little..i find thick grips aggravated the issue.. im 50 and worked outside all my life so i put it down to wear and tear..
maybe get a medicle opinion too.. good luck

Cheers troops, I will have a look at the set up today and see if I'm over stretched to the bars.
I actually find if I loosen my grip it makes it worse once it has started. I find that by doing that the vibration of my fingers bouncing off of the bars aggravates it. Once it has started to get sore on the trail i can only grip tight to stop it getting worse but then I get arm pump haha. Doomed if I do and doomed if I don't it seems.
Cheers for the feedback, I will have a look into this and might even pay a visit to the doctors who will no doubt just say...looks fine to me. Always find them useless to be honest, to get anywhere with them you need to bug them, get a physio to send a letter to them and bug them more before they accept there is a problem. That was my experience with my neck. Only now 9 months down the line are they accepting that there is is a problem after a raft of private physio and letters sent by the physio.

They are ugly but no doubt a lot more supportive and comfortable, and you can notice the difference. Just takes a few rides to tweak them to the correct position. Did Marmite get as much stick as i didi with my truly awesome mudguard?! That's a good read, thanks for sharing. I checked the saddle and stem measure earlier and it was as you said it should be.
Working on the motorbike today and using a socket wrench I could really feel it. Need to try something as this could really become an issue, it may even just be teething issues picking up biking and not being accustomed to smashing rocky sections and roots at pace.

Try 1-2 clicks less rebound as well. That also helped me before.

My mate gets bad circulation in his hands especially when its cold conditions, his hands go numb and he can't feel the bars, not suggesting that's what it is but it's his wee medical thing but it led me to thinking about arthritis which my wife has in her knuckles, they swell up and get really painful, just fingers not thumbs, it's seen as an older persons thing but can affect any age really www.arthritis.org/about-arthritis/where-it-hurts/wrist-hand-and-finger-pain/

That was my first thoughts when Danny mentioned it on the ride..hope to God it's not ..he is way too young to be saddled with that condition.. Ask your doc. to refer you for an x-ray then go back and discuss with him

Changing from lock on to Oury wire on grips have made a massive difference for me. My hands were torn to shreds after every ride with ODI lock on's.

Thanks for all of the feedback troops. Hands are ok for day to day use now but hurt when gripping tight / twisting something while gripped tight. Should be ok by the weekend though which is the main thing. The Glentress weekender suggested by chopper should be interesting though to see how they hold up over tow days.

I have never felt a more comfortable grip than the ODI Yeti's, see if you can spot someone with em on the bike and err..have a feel.

havent read every reply but my mate gets it and its comon in riders. its the ulner nerve in the hand that gets irritated when riding. specialized do the bg gloves with a special palm pad that supports the ulner nerve and takes it off not completely but partially. look at these.

I don't think Danny's particular problem was down to the ulner nerve ...he was complaining of every knuckle joint on his fingers hurting ..sounded more arthritic . I have tried some of the specialized gloves ( well fingerless mits) and they do help a lot

Thanks a lot for this guys. I have since been back to glentress and Inners along wth local rides and unfortunately the only way so far to reduce the pain is to ride slower. However, that's not on the agenda as I like speed so I will look into both of the above as I am willing to give anything a try to see if it helps. Cheers guys
