So just serviced my forks and used the recommended rockshox 5w oil again. It came in 120ml bottles so I needed 2. This got me thinking..will any 5w fork oil do the same job. For example I can get 500ml of castrol 5w fork oil for the price of 120ml of the rockshox stuff. What you all using?

Cheers Jan. So as long as the fork oil has a cst@40 of 16 then it will be the same as the rockshox 5wt? If it is lower than 16 it will be softer and higher than 16 will be a bit firmer? Think I will look at the local motor factors and halfords next time then and just get a big bottle of the stuff.

You may have seen, I needed the 5wt oil for my dropper post. Went and got half a litre of motorcycle fork oil from halfords for the same price as the 120ml Rockshox stuff
I'm sure if it can work in a motorcycle fork it will be perfectly happy on a MTB

We use 0/40 mobile 1 in both the rock shock pikes and boxxer, but we still use the 5wt rockshox oil in the reverb. A bike mechanic said when they couldn't get any rockshox said mobile 1 was ok to use in the forks. What forks are you running?

Nothing fancy Kalli just the Recons that came on the bike. Would love some Reba's but getting 26" straight steerer ones ain't cheap...more than the bikes worth. It will be new bike before new forks.

Yeah hubby was after some new forks for his old hardtail hut thats a straight steerer to and its been virtually impossible to find some at a good price on crc. I'm not gonna give him any ideas about getting a new one as its my turn to have a new bike next!!!!

Oil wise you can use motorbike bike fork oil bottles are bigger an its cheaper. Ive got a few bottles of Rockoil an Silkolene in various weights. Incidentally if you service a reverb your better off with 2.5W which is closer to the spec they supply in the kit Opie oils is always a good shout for cheap oils
