Are they cup and cone? My Shimanos are. Dead easy, just don't drop the bearings (I have a £2 magnetic pen thingy that I stick in and removes all the bearings) and count how many you have in each side when you remove them. I dropped mine and had to look up how many I was trying to find for refitting, front and rear have different amounts I think. Then just don't over tighten.
You should be fine with yer hammer and chisel. Use snot for lubrication. Or get a set of cone spanners, rear cassette remover tool, a magnetic thingy (not essential) some grease (easier to reapply with a mini grease gun) and job done.

If they're cup and cone then its probably the most frustrating job on a bike. I've got the joys of doing this with my retro road bike. The bikes over 40 years old, and im not sure what condition the bearings and races will be in but its not going to be pretty!
I use to do cup and cone service on my hardrock and after you've faffed around with the balls, you had the joys of getting the cones spaced correctly and then getting them tightened so there's no play but the wheels can still move. It use to take me ages!
Havent tried the sealed hubs, hopefully they're a lot easier though!

Thanks chaps - some great advice there, wish I could afford to just send em in and let the pro's do it but on a bit of a skint run at the moment (again).
I'll give it a goo, I reckon.

This post got me servicing my own cup and cone hubs this afternoon as it was pissing down, so no riding. On doing the rear I found one side had 8 bearings the other side 9.......Guess I never did find them all when I dropped them last time around. All sorted now.

If it's the ratchet system hub they are easy as.
You just need to pull the free hub off degrease and clean the springs and clean the bearing. Add a tiny bit of the special dt Swiss red grease to the ratchets and put back together. Really easy to work with unless you lose the spacer an forget to put it back in like I did the first time.
If the springs or ratchets are worn you can buy a set of the Same or faster engagement upgrade. Springs ratchets and grease as a set.
Mine were spline ones. Same principal on dt 240 and 350 ratchet system hubs.
No tools required other than to remove the cassette but can be down with it on just pull the free hub off with cassette attached.

Cheers mate and you were Bob on!
After 4 hours fecking about trying to get 4 wheels set up tubeless - the DT Swiss 1700 splines were done and rebuilt in 20 mins!
As you rightly said...easy as.
