Hey, For my bike build I was going to go 1x10 and possibly add a oneup expander if needed at a later date but I've noticed I can afford 1x11!! So my question is how do I know the 11 sp cassette will fit my back wheel My wheel is a mavic cross one with a normal qr axe. Or is this yet another dumb question??

Depends on the free hub. If it's a standard one eg sram xt 10 speed then only a xt 11 speed will fit and you will need an xd free hub for an sram 1 x 11. Not sure if there is an xd free hub for your wheel.
Either way for a 11 speed cassette you ll need the 11 speed shifter and rear mech to go with it.
If you don't want the expense buy with 42t cassette without the new set up and expense get a praxxis or sunrace wide range cassette.

Can't find anything too help me online. Don't want to waste time ordering the wrong gear, just want it building asap

The only reason that Sram have their own driver is the 10t sprocket which is smaller and so they needed a tapered driver

Simple way to look at it, if you go with Shimano you won't need a new free hub, but your smallest rear cog will be 11t. Go with Sram and you'll need a new free hub, the XD one, but you can drop down to a 10t and potentially smaller once they develop them.
With all of the above options a new 11spd rear mech, shifter and chain will be needed.

If you check Pinkbike, Shimano have just released their SLX 1x11 Drivetrain, with brakes, and its going to be ridiculously cheap if you can hold out until its ready to order! If you're abit of a snob then the XT stuff will probably go down in price as well when this hits the shelves...

New Shimano Groupset - 11 spd SLX & XT di2Just had a quick read of that - looks like a good groupset and offering it in 2x11 as well. The Deore di2 electronic 1x11 looks like it could be had for a decent price too.

If you are on a budget, if you already have a 1x10 set up (sorry, not clear on that Midge) then Charlie the bikemonger is doing the wide range Sunrace cassette for 63 quid. Means all you change is the cassette and nothing else.

Fair do's missed that bit. In that case I'd go for it - proper 1x11. Only reason I've gone with the Sunrace is I already had 1x10 set up and wanted to keep the spend down.

That's my thoughts, was going 1x10 with expander but if I can fit 1x11 why not. Not much difference in price

Go the xt route, cheaper to start with and the cassette is a lot cheaper for the comparable sram version for when it does where out. Changing is very good. Zee Germans have some good prices although I noticed crc also aren't that far off after further reductions.
You don't need to change your freehub.

I've just got rid of my expander, it did the job, but the shifting was never quite spot on. You're doing the right thing.
