is there a right and a wrong way to fit the chainring? I`m guessing the `long` sides sit at right angles to the cranks.

You can't see from the pictures, but there is a small 'notch' on the ring - it comes with a simple diagram so you can't get it wrong, basically, you set the notch behind the drive side crank - easy peasy. Couldn't really 'feel' anything different up and down the road and the photo sort of flattens out the ovality - but boy, when you spin the cranks it don't half look funny So will it effect my shit climbing for the better? or is it more marketing hype? S'pose I'll find out tomorrow. I hope it works as I'm at a wedding tonight (don't tell the bride!) so will be rough as a bears arse tomorrow. Must say the chain ring itself is lovely quality, totally stealth and light - well done Works Components, all for 21 squids too.

Can't wait to see how the oval performs as chatting to a Rodie mate mate who uses one he has nothing but good things to say especially how it evens out the pedal rotation and the power out put

Looking good Pez. Was the Chief 1x10 originally? Well, before the new ring, yes. As bought, no, 2x10.

Did you gave to add/remove any spacers on the BB when you went single to alter the chain line?

Looks good!
Dirk, Shouldnt need to add or remove spacers for it, its a normal crankset you just put it in place of the middle ring should maintain the chainline.
Moto how you getting on with the tyre combo? ive the same on mine loving the Mary, grips so well, also flicks mud amazingly but hey small price to pay.

Chris - no, no spacers required, as step says.
First ride yesterday Step so was a bit tentative at first (been on HD's for 2 years on it) The Nobby Nic felt a bit jumpy but I soon got used to it and it felt fine after 20 mins - the Mary though...first part of Lower Cliff (which is a very fast DH trail) like I said I wasn't fully trusting it, by halfway down I started letting go a bit and it felt absolutely rock solid around the pea gravel coevered corners and berms - I think I am going to love it! Ended up with my 2nd best time on the second half of the cliff and that on my first ride with the MM.

On the flat I thought 'meh' what's all the fuss about - the only thing it did was make Jay and Chris giggle when they saw it 'wobbling' as the cranks spun However, on Cardiac Hill and the climb to Lower Cliff...blimey - what a difference. It's difficult to explain exactly but it just felt 'smoother'. No power spike in the pedal rotation it meant I could pedal really economically and comfortably, quite a weird feeling but the hype is true, IMO. Need to do more climbs yet and will be out Tuesday for a longer ride.

Chief is all ready to go on a ride with EuroBob tomorrow. New drive train (Sunrace 11-42 MX3 cassette) new chain, 32t oval works components chain ring, new XT rotors 203/180, new finned pads (SS). Cranks and BB greased, hubs serviced, wheels trued, new rubber combo of a Magic Mary/Nobby Nic - both 2.35 flavour. Sorry to the Hope fan boys - nothing to see here! Looking forward to seeing how the oval chain ring performs and how the cassette lasts too - it hasn't fallen apart yet though, so happy days! I'm assuming the chainring is also of narrow-wide? or thick or thin?... variety... i'm ordering one just to see... (not Superstar)

Yes mate - narrow/wide oval from works components. Quality item. Don't forget though - if you are running a say 32t standard - you will want the 34t oval. Linky Winky
