Basically i'm running a Fox DHX 5.0 on the Bolt. It seems like a good rear shock, has pedal bob adjustment, bottom out resistance, rebound, air pressure and obviously the coil spring itself.
Now, the Bolt runs a 125mm rear shock, and a 150mm front fork, so the rear end was designed to run quite stiff. After all, the bike started life as a slopestyle/4x bike. My shock currently running a FoxShox 600x2.35 spring.
I'd ideally want something abit 'softer', as i dont think i've managed to bottom out the rear shock yet, and by doing so, i could run less preload so the bike feels alive.
I'm sure i'll be able to pick up something local and cheap, so if i were to drop down to a 400/500 x2.35, would the change be compatible, noticeable and most importantly worthwhile?

Would love one of those Push ElevenSix on mine...but way too expensive. If i were you, i would do what i did when i was trying to decide which shock to buy...

Thanks to both of you, I had a play about with a Fox spring rate calculator. I will give TF a ring tomorrow I'd love a CCDB with a Ti Spring but £££!

Just buy a few cheap nukeproof ones off Crc, send back the ones that don't feel right. Stick some electrical tape around the bottom and they won't mark, you'll be able to do a decent car park test.

be wary of the online spring calculators... I changed the rear spring on my DH rig after an online calc stated that I would be better with a 350lb spring...... took the rig up to fort William after that..... was well cheesed off cos the rear of the bike kept bottoming out (even on the boardwalk it was bottoming out), glad I took the old 450lb spring with me... changed it over and back to happy biking... not one single bottoming out incident..

Yeah that's a good point. That's half the reason why I want to buy something cheap second hand just to make sure it works ok
I took the bike for a ride yesterday. It was the first time I could properly give it the beans. Most of the trails were dry. The bike was flying, as I got PB on a couple of trails!
I checked the shock after, and it did seem like it had reached quite far up its stroke looking at the dust marks on the shaft, so I may only drop down to a 550/500 instead

I'm about 165/170lbs roughly with riding gear, so no heavy weight but not the lightest of riders either Doesnt the spring choice depend on the linkage type as well, as thats what determines how much force is going through the shock?

That is something I am unsure how to answer, I always believed that the linkage was just the pivot point and that the stroke of the shock and the spring soaked up the hits..... But please don't quote me on that one.....LMAO..

But please don't quote me on that one.....LMAO.. Yeah thinking about it, i think you're right, If it was dependent on design, then i'd have had to have put the bike into the online calculator. Either that, or the calculator is just a generic sort of thing...

just generic methinks.... all based on riders weight and the appropriate amount of sag that the bike manufacturers recommend.....it's a bloody minefield at times.....as no two people who weigh the same ride the exact same bike in the exact same way....LOL...
