I would think it depends on the NW at the front!? I'm running 32 at the front and only 40 at the back and the mechanic told me medium cage...bit if i was going 42T I would be better with long! So you did well!

Gonzalo your evans man told you wrong, medium. Is fine for 42 with 32/34 up front for sure most likely any single ring chain ring size anybody is likely to run as the front ring size doesn't have an effect on the calculation used to determine the rear mech. It's all to do with the spread of gears, so typically a medium cage is fine with any reasonable 1*10 but increasing the range of a cassette on a 2*10 or 3* 10 needs a long cage. Some of the guys that sell expander sprockets advise the cage length requirement for various set ups, such as this handy explanation.
Here are two examples:
1. For someone running a 1X system with a 32T front chainring and an 11-42T rear cassette:
(42-11)+(32-32)=31T capacity
2. For someone running a 2X system with 40/28 front chainrings and an 11-42T rear cassette:
(42-11)+(40-28)=43T capacity
Medium cage deraileurs can typically handle 37T (Shimano) 39T (SRAM) and long cage rear derailleurs can handle 43T (Shimano) 45T (SRAM).

To be fair John, he said you could run a 42T but it would put more strain on the mech and require more adjustments on the bolt...which I can understand it I'm honest when I see my mech when it is on the 40T.
