On another forum I frequent there is a general cycling section.
Someone came on the other days asking the following question:
So the conversation went along the lines of:
So guy comes back yesterday saying he'd sorted out a couple of bikes and had gone over budget......
He ended up buying a Santa Cruz Hightower 29" and Juliana Furtado (female version of the 5010).
WTF??
Obviously it's his money, but how can you go from wanting something to ride bridle paths (all be it with a huge budget....) to arriving a t a couple of full sus SC's?

Fair play to the guy, he's spent his money on something that he likes, who cares if he's spent too much money? It's his money and it's not as if he's gone and bought a couple of DH bikes that pedal like a dog

I kind of agree with you Euan - it's his money, so what.
But it struck me that we're probably all guilty of it to a lesser extent.
It's kind of like going out looking for a small, reliable, safe hatchback to do the school run and coming home with a massive 4x4.
I'm guessing the chain drop issue is more down to set up and maintenance of the bikes than if it's 2x, 3x or anything else.

Well, it keeps the market going well and in a few years there will be some nice second hand bits floating about.

Tbf, most people on this forum are over biked imo!
If you're riding a trail centre, then you dont need a big travel full susser... from what ive seen online, they look pretty tame and more of a gravel rollercoaster than a steep, rooty, rocky, big jump black run!
I too could say im over biked. my trails arent the most technical, or with the biggest jumps, and on fitness terms alone, im never really going at full wack on a normal ride.
HOWEVER, we buy nice bikes because its what we like to do with our disposable income! Sure, you could go ride cannock for instance on a £250 Halfords bike, but having a £2k full suss not only makes you feel better, but they will ride better, go wrong less, be easier to pedal and generally just be more pleasant to own.
I started off on an entry level hartail, riding bridleways, the forest trails and a few downhill sections. The fact is i ride the exact same trails now as i did then. I got on fine with my 80mm xc bike so why should i have my DMR Bolt?

The joys of 0% finance... All the gear no idea, whilst killing the second hand market...
