I re-took my Emergency First Aid At Work cert the other day and realised hadn't seen this subject discussed for a while so thought I'd just give people a prompt as we're approaching 'awesome biking weather' period of the year...
Always a good idea to carry a First Aid kit - and always handy to know how to use it. And even if you don't know how to use it always good to carry one as someone in your group/bystander might know how to use it.
After a bit of a 'faux par' last year with my daughter I decided to upgrade my First Aid Kit. She had a rather nasty OTB and suffered a fair bit of gravel rash - no problem, First Aid Dad to the rescue!! - or not, as it turned out... my kit had been used a couple of weeks before helping out a mate on a ride and guess who'd forgot to re-stock his kit. Yep that'll be me then... I had 1 sterile wipe and not much else of use in my kit. So resorted to using water bottles and camelback to irrigate the cuts and patched her up as best I could until we got back to civilisation..... Out of the 4 adults in our group that day I was the only one with a First Aid Kit.
So anyway - back to the subject.
I've upgraded my kit to one of these which I picked up from the SJA training last week:
Home/Sport universal First Aid Kit
And after reading THIS ARTICLE posted last year I have added a couple of extras (which I had in my small previous kit) in the form of a set of extra dressings, some more wipes and a space blanket.
I also came across a couple of other interesting articles on line from BIKE RADAR - First Aid on the trail and British Cycling - What to carry on an MTB ride
I'm quite lucky that I get my First Aid training through work (and can also 'borrow' the slightly out of date dressings etc. to top my kit up), but I think even if you do a basic First Aid course it's worth while - even if just knowing how to dress a wound properly, keep airway clear and put someone in the recovery position.
I'm contemplating paying for myself to go on an Outdoor Remote First Aid Course later in the year to keep my skills up and hopefully learn a bit more.
Hopefully you'll find the above info and links useful.
I've also added a poll just to see who does/doesn't carry and who has training of some sort.
Stay safe!

I carry a first aid kit ...it's fairly basic ...so know how to use what is in that particular kit...but don't have first aid training . I had the opportunity to attend a course while trail building with KTR...funded by the F.C...but couldn't go on the required dates ...major regret ..

I've always carried one, helped patch a couple of riders up over the years.Once found a young woman at the start of transmission (one of the trails at hamsterly) with two broken arms. Couldn't do much more than keep her warm and calm till the air ambulance arrived. id urge everyone to carry one even just a basic one, if you don't know 1st aid it could help someone who does.

Got the basic first aid kit, got it from a tool shop, seems to have a load of dressings in e.t.c. It lives at the bottom of my camelbak...
Never been on a course, but i will try and get myself on one soon.. Ive already had to deal with a fallen rider and wait for the air ambulance so its definately worth being prepared for

I carry rubber gloves, duct tape, cable ties, a plastic ground sheet, a black balaclava, a craft knife and a bottle of rohpynol. Oh, hang on, what kit for first aid, you said? Whoops.

Glad this has been posted, i was just about to ask about upgrading mine. I was given it by work, looked in the other day and it's pretty basic. So which ones are recommended? I find the ones you buy don't have all you need, or have way to much and are therefore too big. I had an old kit and I binned the out of date stuff and took out things I really wouldn't use on the trails. For example, if I MTF up will I really need a plaster (I have tape/gauze if need be), burn gels, blisters kits, savlon all came out. In went steri strips, a couple of pain killers a whistle, foil blanket and a torch (as well as the bandages, tape, glauze, wipes, gloves and large dressings). I even put in some paracord as it has a load of uses (tie a splint on, tourniquet etc). Things I might need if I come off in the middle of nowhere where or enough to put me together until I get home. I am looking at adding a small saline bottle to wash wounds/eyes and a sachet of celox for any major wounds. I sometimes pack a bivvy bag for remote rides. As I say, hope I never need it but if I ever do I hope it gets me to safety and it is light and only about 6x3 so packs away at the bottom of my bag.

I'd say extra dressings, plenty of plasters, plenty of wipes and some saline/eyewash things for irrigating cuts/eyes. Oh and a space blanket.
Look at the article I posted about how to make up a mountain kit should give you ideas (obviously don't need the portable shelter etc.).

Got antiseptic spray, large gauze wound dressings, alcohol wipes, normal size dressings, steri strips for holding bad cuts together, a sling (which could double as a tourniquet) and probably the most important thing I carry (I think) are a couple of the silver foil type blankets for the winter rides and to help combat shock.
I've had first aid training and am going on a refresher course later this summer. I still haven't forgiven myself that that day at BPW I had decided to leave my Osprey (and first aid kit) in the car at the cafe. I certainly won't be doing that again.

Not sure about off the shelf ones, as you'll probably end up adding extra kit to it anyway.
What has yours got in it?
If it's got most of the basics covered than I'd have thought a bit of careful upgrading could be done.
