Really enjoyed it today - bloody hard though - some of the climbs... It's a really good trail, probably suffers a bit in comparison to Degla's all out fun fest and probably a tad too much climbing BUT ...I loved the 'vibe' of the place. Just a car park and a trail, absolutely empty of other riders (one bloke in the car park about to start as we were finishing) and the views from the top of the trails - stunning. Beansy took some photo's so hopefully they will be put on here at some point...and....it's got a castle! a real feckin castle! Perfect conditions too, loving the rooty fast sections. Glad to have ticked it off and would like to go back with someone who knows some of the cheekies.

Yeah, good ride. The amount of short, sharp climbs was a surprise to be honest! Seemed to spend most of my time changing gear but, with that being said, It's a great place to ride. Some of the sections are really rooty, fast and swoopy.. Loved it! As Zupoo said, we saw just one person whilst there and that was in the car park as we were leaving! The place has some amazing views and looking at the trails, they don't get a huge amount of use. The signage caught us out once or twice or maybe I should say, the lack of signage!? On the whole, a great place to ride and another centre ticked off the list. I'd definitely go back but it would be hard to choose it over Degla (both roughly the same distance from us) The weather was perfect and we ended up at Weatherspoons

Sometimes in new places the climbing doesn't bother you as much, as it's all new! Good to see The FullSuss saw the trails!

Love hopton, though it does have a few more people on a sunny sunday morning. First time i went i was caught out by the fact that there were no toilets so had to find a secluded tree, off i trudged quite far into the undergrowth so no one from the car park would see me, however, part way through i became aware that i was actually squatting not far from the the little practice track:-$ Thank goodness its not a busy track and no arsehole with a gopro was filming the ride, or i may have been on youtube now:-(

I'll always be on the Mega if the suns out As soon as winter arrives again, it'll be put back into hibernation and the Scout will be out. Plans for the Mega for when it's in hibernation are :- Fork and shock service, rear hub service, new chain cassette and chainring and maybe new bars as mine are scratched!

I did have a spare set but sold 'em Still got a spare CK BB though I think cost will be around 5 or 600, not including bars and assuming there are no problems with the forks or shock.

Seriously Kalli - what do you think of the climbing? Now admittedly, I'm not built for speed or climbing these days but even the racing snake that is Beansy thought there was a bit too much climbing?
What do you regulars think?

What do you regulars think? That big hill that goes fire road into twisty single track, then a hellish fire road climb always sucks, then as I know whats coming its ok until that climb near the end, that seriously sucks when muddy. That first climb though, you always think your at the end then go round a corner and find its just more climbing, first time i thought i had died and gone to hell. On one occasion at hopton we came down the first descent onto the fire road with a field on the left (not to far from the beginning and before the big climb) to find people in the field on the left shooting pheasant and the beaters in the hill in the bushes on the right. Now i am quite use to being around shotguns, but i nearly shit myself.

Trouble is for me is it's the same distance away as Degla, so it'll always be hard to put Hopton over a ride at Degla. Even though we had the best brekkie egg and bacon buttie I've ever had at the roadside cafe - Little Britain - bloody lovely it was.

I found this of interest (I love Castles - this one doesn't disappoint) That picturesque old ruin, sat there in the sun drenched fields - has quite a bloody past - just shows what you can find with some research. The massacre in the cellar
Time team even did a special programme on it. I think the photo below, probably represents this castle better.

I enjoyed Hopton when i went until i had my worst OTB I've ever had which shook me up a bit. It's a great little secluded place to be fair. I went in winter and the climbs in the mud were hard work so reckon it would be much better now. Hopton and Degla are 2 completely different places. Degla is more fun and everything you need and would be my choice, but if you want peace and quiet the Hopton is a good option.

It's like I said Jimbo - I loved the 'vibe' of the place. At the top of the climbs, looking down onto that double valley, with it's thatched and ancient buildings...you could have been 300 years ago back in time. The only sounds were birds, insects and the farm animals way below us. Fantastic in the summer and really peaceful. Not one single other rider on the whole trail.
Still surprisingly wet under the trees and the bikes were covered in mud, I can imagine winter being a proper pain. Wish I'd have had a wander over to the castle too, now I know it's grisly past.
I probably will visit again, maybe later this summer. Some of the rooty descents were brilliant too.
