Hi , im looking for some advise please for a possible ride out route on Saturday as the long hairs boss (shmbo) is away for the day and ive got a free pass ,id love to get up to the lakes but time is against me so im looking for a good techy ride out possibly around Skipton + Malham and the gateway to the dales ,something around 20+ miles plenty of climbing and good downhill runs too , I was going to do the Dark peak loop again but the same runs can get a bit boring after a while .
I did look at a Calderdale loop but again its been done to death ,I just fancy a change

kirkys your man for malham area.but when you say 'the dark peak loop' which route is it? theres more to the peaks than just one route.have you tried the jacobs ladder ride? possiby the best condensed route in the peaks, or the cutgate route which should be at its best at this time of year.whereabouts are you based? iv done lakes rides in the day there and back from sheffield whch is 2 and half hours drive to south lakes.

Ive done , Jacobs Cutgate, Hollins cross , Edale Castleton to death , I live just in Saddleworth ,so most of the Peak district is on my door step , same with Calderdale and Kirklees. I was in the Lake 2 weeks back and met Kirky in Borrowdale (good day out ) then did Nan beild the day after , the south lakes are 80 miuntes away for me where as Keswick and such are closer to 2 1/2 hours so a little to far for Saturday .
Skipton is just 50 minutes away so just fancied a change , ive looked on pedalnorth at the Settle loop which takes in Malham cove , looks like it might be a winner

If you do the Settle loop do it clockwise as the descent is better

Steve I may well beheading around those parts tomorrow to try some of the pen y Ghent route in reverse tagged onto the best descents from Clapham.
I would have liked to show you something around there on Saturday morning and I will be riding but need to be home by 1ish to takeover the kids as my wife goes on a late shift, so going to stay a bit more local.
I'm planning on maybe doing something around rivington, as I can control the timings a bit better, it would include a few good of the famous descents for sure. If I start early enough then some of the naughtier cheekies, but for sure San Marino, shooting hut, two lads, ice cream run. Actually they are all footpaths anyway but some are more acceptable than others.
Could also do something from the burnley side, just depends if that falls into the bits you've down too death. Down from the windmills, past can't, through hurstwood. Left to swinger ton zig zags, ridealgh lane, climb up widdop (you wanted a nasty climb this is a bastard) descend gorple, play in hurstwood trails climb back up to the windmills. That's probably handier for me.

Sorry forgot to say I wouldn't bother with the settle loop, without bolting on some stuff at the malham end. Even then it's more of a steady ride with only a couple of worthwhile descents.
I'll send a linky to a good loop out of Horton around pen y Ghent, or hopefully what's an even better one after my ride tomorrow.

Steve is on the fence atm as hes never done a Rivington ride ,I wanted to get up to Malham more for the views as well as the ride out , if I had time I be up in the lakes but the boss will be back by 5pm , I would be tempted but a run around Pen y Ghent , I will speak to Rob (lad from Borrowdale and ask what he fanices too )

There's some nice views on the settle loop but probably better on the pen y. Ghent loop, the descents are a lot better ending in a 2 to 3 mile descent in either direction, probably longer and more varied anti clockwise but it means an awfully steep and loose climb to start with and a field climb rather than field descsnt. there's a lot more single track rather than wide pedestrian track that makes up the bulk of the settle loop, far less walkers as well, especially when you are heading over foxup and down to Halton gill.
Let me know if you head over that way and I'll give you some pointers
Decisions, decisions.

Cheers for the offer John but Rivington isnt for me ,im tempted to get up to the lakes again and get up early ,but a route around Pen y gwent interests me as long as its not a busy walker route as its part of the 3 peaks isnt it ?

Just been around penny Ghent today, you get walkers around Clapham as it's nice to park up have a coffee etc, likewise form Horton, so the walkers are on the near side. I met plenty of walkers on my way up from Clapham towards Heskwith bridge, where the climb up towards pen y Ghent and the path to the summit begins. Heading up towards pen y Ghent itself I only met one family of walkers, a bit of a bugger of a climb gaining 1400/1500 ft in a mile and a half, so not a problem to make a slow pass of a group of red socks. Once you turn the corner and head around the side and over to Halton hill/foxup it's very remote, well at least the route I take is. I didn't see anybody again for the next couple of hours other than cows and sheep. The climb up from foxup farm to foxup moor is the only push of the day but from the top of there when it's dry it's a nice roller coaster of singletrack with bumps and drops over limestone features then a fast flowing descent down to hull pot. A quick look in there and then there's around a further mile and half of fast choppy wide track back to Horton. I missed that bug out today and climbed back over to self side to leave the final descent back into Clapham. www.strava.com/activities/596305766

You should enjoy that one nothing too testing but a nice day out on a bike, the drag up Stockdale lane is rewarded with a good down hill towards Malham Tarn, the bit around the lake is a bit boring but scenic and not sure what its like down to Kilnsey (not been that way you'll have to let me know).
