So I am fed up swapping tyres on my rear wheel to use on the turbo. Started looking on flea bay and pink bike for a cheap, old 10 speed 26" rear wheel for the trainer. They seem to be around the 40/50 quid mark or 70/80 new. Then I noticed I can buy a new rim, hub, spokes and nipples for about 50 quid. I do like to tinker so thought I might try to build a wheel myself for the trainer. As it is only for the trainer I thought what is the worst that could happen...... Well after a bit of reading I was encouraged to find I didn't need any fancy tools but I did need to find out...what nipple length do I need 12mm/14mm etc? What spoke length do I need for the hub 258mm/280mm and many many more? What lace pattern? What is the flange length....WTF is a flange....OK I GIVE UP.
Back to flea bay. I guess it is not so simple.

Flllllange
I build wheels so don't panic, nipple length will more depend on what spoke choice you make etc. All you really need to do is get the make an model of the hub an the rim or the ERD from the rim makes site and whack them into a spoke calculator. lacing pattern three cross is best on MTB rims.
The flange on a hub is basically where the spokes go into, the flange length is the length from the centre axle point of the hub to the tip of where you put the spokes in. That bit is called the flange. Fancy tools are not needed but can help.
Couple of spoke calculators for you, not all have all the rims an hubs. Id worry more about getting a site that lists the hub than the rim as the only value you need on a rim is the ERD.
