Hi guys I may have had this conversation before but as I have the memories of a gold fish I need information again as I keep thinking about getting a second hand garmin .
but not sure if they with it for what I want as they all seem to be geared towards rode riding , do they work for trail riding not normal marked stuff I'm thinking more the off piest stuff as I can never remember were they are (as I say gold fish) .
it seems to be that garmin are a little more accurate than strava , but what I want really is to not have to stick to marked trails when on my own as I get board easy so end up saying stuff it and not bothering going out .
ive been looking at the edge 500 , 605 and 705
cheers

cant help you with those three, mines a garmin oregon. yes they definately work on trails. apart from downloading routes or tracks from sites or an email attachment you can plot your own. i use garmin basecamp which is free to download to the laptop, to plot and view mine. but i also use O.S. mapping which is on an S.D. card which slots into my device, the map then overlays onto garmin basecamp to view the detail of the map. the SD mapping isnt cheap but depending which device you go for it could be included in the price. the main downside to my device is that its crap at measuring accurate altitude. it is very accurate though on distance (within 10ft). if you are riding somewhere you arnt familir with, dont rely completely on the device, its always advisable to also use a paper map. i always print off an A4 size section of an O.S. map to take out with me if im riding somewhere new.

1) garmin 800edge or touring with OS map, (can only recommend what I have tried) 2) plug to laptop 3) go to this website : www.bikehike.co.uk/mapview.php4) superzoom area of map you desire to ride (i use satellite in map option as I find it easier to recognize waypoints) "Drag Edit Mode" to create/plot your own map...then save ..then upload to garmin.. then go ride 4a) or you can google some gpx files online, load the GPX files on the website (bikehike.co.uk) and review the map if so you desire to ride the choosen plots/waypoints then upload it to your garmin... or ask someone if they have GPX files they can share. it seems a lot of faff to learn at the beginning, but easy as 123 when you get your head around it. *i dont know if there is a way around it but once you set out garmin to follow and halfway to your ride you decided to just home you will be on your own as the garmin map will continue to follow its destination exactly like normal car satnav....learnt that in Long Mynnd.
