Just tried for an hour to get tyres to seal on to the rim....
F**k that I'm ordering tubes!

Keep persisting! It's well worth it in the end! But it all depends on the rim and tyre combo to be fair! My new wheels also were a pain in the arse, but only to actually get the tyres on the rim, due to the width of the rims! Don't give up!

Thanks for the offer Gaz, but will be sticking with tubes though for the time being. Tape was a bitch to get sat properly in the rim as there isn't much give in it, so might try some different tape. Will give it a bash later on once I've ridden it a bit.

Cheers Gaz. Daft question - if it only needs to seal the spoke holes why is the rim tape in kits so wide? Bought the tape recommended for my rims and it's pretty wide so runs up the side towards the bead hook of the rim. That can't help much if the tyres are already pretty tight on the rim. Tried soapy water and couldn't get em to pop on in one place and couldn't slide the tyre to get it any closer.

Like others have said the stans rim tape is just a waste of money, gaffer tape or gorilla tape worked just fine on my wtb 45S, hope tech and mavic rims, it's just some tyres are just crop as sealing, maxxis tyres are or have been a doddle with a track pump as have specialized purgatory, but Schwalbe tyres have always been real handful, even removing the valve core I struggled, but I find the 200bar compressor at work makes light work of them now..

I'm off to pick up some tubes at lunch time.
I think the taping issue is down to the profile of the rim - being carbon they're quite deep, but narrow at the bottom. I really struggled to get the tape right down in the groove.
I just CBA to faff with them again as I just want to get the wheels on so I can finish the build and get riding.
Will see how much I can balls up the brake hose trimming in the next couple of days too....

Gorilla tape is the hollow mate works a treat I sorted front and back on non tubeless rims with non tubeless tyres out with it .also the trick with the pop bottle and a pair of mole grips (look on you tube ) works great for seating tyres on

Cheers Chris - will do. Managed to get one tyre on with a tube - took ages to get it to seat, ended up with best part of 50psi to get it to go properly. Think I'm gonna need a compressor to do it tubeless.

Stick at it Dirk - it's 100% worth it. Failing that bet Gnarly or Peloton in Town will do it for a few quid a wheel for you. If Eurobob is coming around to yours and there are tools involved...do us a favour mate and check that your house, contents and life insurance policies are up to date

im still yet to decide whether tubeless is noticably better, only done two rides on full tubeless, but im giving it a good go first before i'll make up my mind. just a couple of tips from me. for getting the tyre to seat, fit a tube in first to form the tyre into shape, leave at least over night or better still ride it. then try again. also i use this as a recommendation from low cogger, pump it up to 60 psi with a track pump and take out the valve core from the tyre to allow more air flow. im going make a similar inflator soon with a fire extinguisher instead of a garden spray.

On the tubeless - you can argue if it 'feels' better or not.
What isn't up for debate is that I haven't had a flat in 2 years now since going full tubeless, and where I ride is thorn and bramble alley at times. That alone is worth the effort.

Got both on with tubes at the moment. Hoping it'll stretch the tyre a bit and help when I have another go.

It should do - when I fitted the MM and NN I forgot to do that myself and would they bugger go up. Half an hour with tubes pumped up to 50 psi though - straight up..sweet. Another tip, give the rim and tyre bead a wipe with a soapy sponge just before you go for it.

I notice many times on close inspection, how many tiny punctures I get but due to the Stans, i can go on and it doesn't stop the fun! Another thing is the obvious considerable weight saving...

Managed to get the tyres seated with tubes - took 60psi with the track pump to get the rear to pop onto the rim/bead properly! Had a nightmare trying to get the last 3 inches to pop on the one side - I had the tyre off twice hoping it would stretch it a bit.
