john the nan bield climb and descent is a tough one, probably one i'd not do if i was alone. the climb is basically mountain climbing with a bike on your shoulders. the second is one i'd recommend doing if your on your own. its a variation of one i did in april when we spent a week up there [edit] i need to pay more attention, that isnt the same route that includes the mountain climbing i had in mind

Sorry Glynn, a tad confused. Do you mean the first one doesn't have the tough hike a bike? I think it mentions one bit is short push up. I've heard Nan Bield can be tough but I expect there are multiple route options from there.

I once did Gatesgarth & Nan Bield and vowed never again ..and guess what ..I've never done it again ! It really all depends how much you like lifting / carrying / pushing your bike ..dont listen to the magazine bullshit either as to how good the descent is ..it isn't all that !

sorry john, the nan bield route isnt the one i thought it was. it doesnt have the same tough mountain climb i was thinking of.yes there looks to be variations of a nan bield ride.im also a bit confused as it appears to climb nan bield up the one we came down, i think yours climbs from kentmere in an anti clockwise direction, is that right? that would mean heading to high street and down then climbing up garburn and down back to kentmere which is what i am familiar with. is that right? the second one is ridable on the whole route, i dont know of any hike-a-bike on that one

Looks like I won't do it tomorrow now.
Just tried to fit the new roof bars to my car and after fitting on bear found that one of the essential parts for the second is missing so I need to wait for a replacement.

Nan beild is at best OK , a few good runs before Sandgil but after that its just plain nasty , to much hike push grit to Gatesgarth and the yomp up after is just grim, on the run from Nan back to Kentmere is good but not worth all the effort . Garburn from Stavley and back round green quarter looks a better option and leaves a few ours for a trip round Ambleside or Ullswater

steve your description sounds like the same one as we did as part of the 3 passes ride. the one that kirky had in mind is a different version which goes up the nan bield descent. it would still include hike-a-bike up there but iv not heard of kirkys version before.

I fancy the three passes ride. Im sure it's going to be a tough one but I think it's one of those you need to do.

I can think of at least one sadist who would be happy to ride it with me.
