Will the mech work with an 11-36 cassette?
Some places say yes, other places say no..

If you have the little adapter that comes with all Saint rear mechs then yes it will, without this it will not work

I've not ordered or anything yet, wanted to be 100% sure it would work! I know it has 2 modes, downhill & freeride. I take it by fitting that adaptor, it becomes 'freeride'?

Yes the adapter is the freeride adapter and all Saint mechs are supposed to come with them, it enables the mech to be used on wide bodied cassettes to a maximum of 11-36

It works but it's not a brilliant combo, even with the clutch you still get bags of chain slap on the lower cogs because of the extra chain you need to run the 36 with the short cage, mine often over shifts down between the 11t and frame and jams, even though I have the limit screw set so the upper jockey is slightly inboard of the 11t. If I had to replace it I'd go xt all day long.

The clutch is still strong and I have firmed it up more using the tensioner, however in the relaxed position the clutch has no bearing on the flappy chain, I've always put the over shifting between 13-11 down to there being no b-tension screw so the upper jockey sits way further away from the cassette than on a dedicated wide range mech. I guess chain slap also depends on frame design. It's also mated to the saint shifter and shimano cable set.
Depending on your use I'd say there are better, it's tough as old boots mind. In fact, send me a new xt and you can have my shadow+ saint, that's the cheapest way to get one! :-D
