Ok so I am starting my long slow search for a new bike and my first full bouncer. I have some funds coming which means I should be able to get one Nov onwards (I have been a good boy at work and got a bonus, woohoo). In no rush and happy to wait as I won't get out much Nov to Feb anyway due to work. I have had my eye on one for a while now and currently thinking of getting the frame and building up myself from there. My question to all you guys and gals is would you get the 2017 model which I believe is going to be boost compatible or save a few bob (about 30% off at the moment) and get the 2016 model which is 142x12. If I go for 2016 I then have choice of new or maybe second hand (there is a good one on pinkbike at about 50% off). Hhmmm

Can only answer this knowing what the frame is?

Wait until the 2017 model comes out and THEN make your decision ...based on the likelihood that the reduction will be greater on 2016 models if you go down that route .. Boost what by the way ? Tyre size or just axle ? I haven't voted on that basis ..

Can only answer this knowing what the frame is? Not saying, it will be a surprise Nothing fancy but 135mm at the back 140/150 at the front.

So I had a big think about this, I sort of decided the following
- Boost is prolly going be the new standard for trail bikes, I dont know the pros and cons and most people hate it, but its coming - Most people buy a trail bike off the peg as a full build, similarly when people sell their old bike to fund the new one its usually as a full bike - Some people may buy a frame only but even then they tend to buy new bits (who wants to hang old wheels on a new bike for example)
So I concluded that I would prolly buy a 2016 non boost bike because it will be a lot cheaper and you will get way better parts, rather than wait for a newer one. You will still be able to buy non boost wheels (in the same way you still get 26" stuff) in the future. On the trail performance stakes there will be basically no difference. A non boost bike is in no way limited compared to a boost bike, especially if you are buying a higher spec 2016 model in the sales (imo)
OK the second hand resale value may be impacted because it isnt boost, but you would prolly be paying a lot less than RRP for it new in the first place so its not like you would be loosing a fortune on it. If that makes sense?

Makes sense to me - but then I'm still in the 20th Century with 26" wheels...

Buy the bike that will make you most happy for the best/right money. Remember, tomorrow another new standard will come...its like a carrot in front of your eyes, and tomorrow the next best thing will come.

This 100%, I've just ordered a new 2017 frame and it's non boost and it doesn't bother me in the slightest

I think the beer goggles go on and you can get carried away when it's yourself doing the shopping. I am like my wife in a shoe shop just now......glad I have to wait a couple of months for the money to come through so it will let me cool off and not make a rash decision (or get sucked in to the 2017 model prices). My list of 6 is now really a list of 2 and money/availability will probably dictate which one and wheather it's frame only or full build. Oh and colour of course

Yeah ..come on Andy ..dont be a shy lad .. Not saying for now as I don't want another "what bike" thread where I say my short list then I get a load of " have you though about x or y" and I get my head in a spin and can't make a decision. When the funds are in and I am in a place to buy from Nov I no doubt will seek everyone's advice and opinions. My list has gone from 6 to 2 up to 3 so no point wasting everyone's time until I am ready to pull the trigger. All I know it will be is a short travel full Susser.....oh and hodgy nice bike BTW
