I'm struggling to see the point of 12 speed - although I suppose it'll allow you to run a bigger front ring to give better top end speed and still give you a good crawler gear for steep stuff.

Saw this in my LBS yesterday!
If you need a 50t chainring then get a double set up or build your fitness up!!

If you need a 50t chainring then get a double set up or build your fitness up!! You're missing the point...its about being able to still run a single chainring at the front but a much bigger one. If i had this, i could even consider a 36T at the front having the same ratio at the top end, but a much stronger one at the bottom end...

Yeah i know but like what Malamute says, how often do you spin out going down hill? I only ever do that when i'm on a fireroad, a road or the smoothest bit of downhill trail... Its cool and all that, but 12 speeds is excessive and for 95% of the riding community, i dont think its needed...

Was gonna put it on my new bike, but i just don't need it. I can climb on the 34T/42 and never spin out. That ratio around more natural trails like the Peaks (let alone the Lakes) would be tough! The other day as i went to Jacobs Ladder, on 32T/40, i was swearing at myself for not having at least a 42 on the cassette. But maybe i just need to get under that squat rack a bit more often...lol

But it would be nice, even on the fireroads, or even tarmac, etc, to have a heavier gear...however, at 350 quid (plus mech, etc)...im out. maybe one day when things wear out i might consider a OneUp bigger chainring with their 45T sprocket.

I find my 10 speed wide ratio sun race 42 with a 32 upfront is spot on. so much so I've bought 2 spare for when it wears out!

I have a 32t oval chainring up front with a 10 speed cassette with 42t expander on rear and I think its pretty much perfect for everything I ride, trail centre and natural stuff.

call me old fashioned but........i like plenty of gears. i went out on the hardtail today on a 26 mile ride. nothing unusual but iv always felt that with the 2x10, i miss the fact that the gear ratios are closer with 3x9...........long live 3x9......it'll be the future again i'll re-word that..........i prefer the closer ratios with 3x9 than 2x10.

Agree with Kalli...32 oval at the front with a 42 at the back is a perfect combo...40 makes you have a harder workout... However, I can see the benefit of 12 gears with a 34/36 front and 50 rear. Glynn...1X combo is a bit like a dropper...once you try it...

i also remember kirky telling me that sometimes with 1x10, his gears sometimes jump 2 or 3 sprockets in one go during a gear change. not something you want when you're in the middle of a tough climb

That's the expander sprockets glynn and the sunrace wide range cassette. If you accidentally back pedal whilst on the big sprocket.

Glynn ..that was my big fear when buying the Whyte ..only it was unfounded . True the 46t means I'm no worse off ..but I tend to find I only use that when I'm gurning over the bars ..and most of the climbing is done on the next cog down ..which strangely on this set up is a 37t .. A bloke as fit as yourself would love the set up I'm sure...

Yeah, I have the same problem if I back pedal (at least half to full Rev) while on the biggest sprocket...apparently if you use a SRAM chain, it helps not to happen!?...however how many times do you back pedal while on the top?! The fact that you don't have to worry with chain lines, crossing, etc...makes it so easier, besides all the other benefits.

My sunrace 42 doesn't do that when back pedalling. think that tends to happen if you shorten the chain too much.

lol neil ! ......im the only one i know that still rides 3x9. as a matter of interest, does anyone else still use it My mate does, He brought a load of XT 9 speed stuff in the sale thinking he was getting a good deal, just as the 10 speed stuff was coming more popular To be honest, its perfectly useable, the only issue i had with my 3x9 set up was the chain dropping, so i just went 1x10 and stopped that I'm looking for a cheapo HT at the moment, and it will probably have a double or triple set up but that will be fine for now!
