I have been looking at lights for the bike for the winter rides.
How much light are we needing? I was probably going to do a Bar and Helmet combo.
How much do you guys think I will need on each?

around 1200 lumens on each in my opinion. beam pattern is also a factor, but you'll not know what its like till you've tried it.
im assuming its for off road rather than on road.

Just buy the two brightest ones you can afford and go from there
Get one with a wide spread for the bars and a more direct one for your helmet to really light up where your looking

I have 2700 lumens in total ..
Exposure Maxx on the bars and "quality " Chinese lights on my helmet .( Sanguan)
The helmet mounted lights kick out the most light and these are what you should concentrate on ...as they will illuminate the area you are looking at as opposed to the bar mounted lights which will only light up the area in which your bars are pointing ...
Hope you have a lot of fun ..you may go slower ..but it will seem twice as fast !

You need slightly more than everyone else on the ride with you! If your on your own is surprising how little light you actually need but if your with a group and the ride behind has a brighter light than you then you'll be riding in your own shadow. For £27 Aldi's light is a good place to start www.aldi.co.uk/cree-high-lumen-bike-light/p/070187027744400I currently use a Nitefighter BT70 (2800 lumens) on my bars and a Bt21 (1600 lumens) on my helmet.Very rarely need both on full power though  and just use the BT21 if I'm on my own |

Yeah, not sure if I keep both or return one of the sets...my helmet comes with a light mount so it should be good to get a light fitted...doubt it will be too heavy...strengthens your neck muscles! Definatly worth keeping both if the aldi police dont come knocking at your door. Or its even a bargain keeping both for £56
