Time for the youngest (nearly 6) to have a new bike. She's outgrown her Hello Kitty single speed and I want to get her something with gears and not too heavy.
I've ruled out Isla bikes due to the fact that £370 for a kids bike is ridiculous.
Friend of ours Son has just got a Frog 52 which looks superb and he had no problem with the gears even though they're thumb-shift. Not sure if the 52 will be a bit small for my youngest as she's quite tall for a nearly 6 y/o.
The next size up is the Frog 55, with this going for £260 and weights 8.8kg - can't seem to find a way of getting any discount on one though.
have seen this Cube 200 on CRC which is coming in at 10kg (just over 1kg heavier than the Frog's). With British Cycling discount will be just about £195.
There's also the Pinnacle Ash [/url] from Evans at £240 and 9.1kg.
Any other recommendations?

My kids grew up on Decathlon bikes, a little heavy but circa £140 and then it doesn't matter if it gets scratched etc.

Gaz - think that might be a bit bog for her - need a 20" wheel. Jimbo - Have looked at the Decathlon bikes, but at 12kg for a 5 speed it's a bit heavy, and it looks like Stevie Wonder designed the frame: Also found the Merida Matts Jr 20W which apparently comes in around £170 and 10kgs:

Admittedly they didn't used to look like that!! Plus I bought them when Btwin were trying to break into the UK market circa 10 years ago and they were much better specced so they got good reviews and since then they have obviously downgraded to save cost

Our kids had the specialized hotrocks, sons still on his hotrock xc 24. They are good kids bikes. Think they have just added some little kids fattie bikes to there line up for 2017. They look good, almost enough to make me want another one, almost.

I manage to grab myself a huge bargain not so long ago at the Evans warehouse sale...combined with some Tesco vouchers, which at the time at least, you could double their value for Evans vouchers, I got it for 60 quid! This was it...I would advise you buying a 24 wheel otherwise in a year, you will be having the same problem. Great bike. www.evanscycles.com/jamis-x-24-2017-kids-bike-EV275222

G 24" is too big for her - she's already tried nicking her brothers that I built him.

With Islabikes the initial outlay seems a lot but you go and have a look at what you could sell it for once she's outgrown it. They're almost the same as new meaning they get a cracking bike for at most £100. They are worth every penny. But not the new more expensive range. That's just taking the piss (although I'm desperate to get some 20" stans crest rims for my nipper).

I was seriously tempted to get this as it looks awesome: Early Rider Belter 20. Belt drive, hub gears, discs, 80mm forks. £570ish. 9kg. I didn't.

Don't forget the Hoy bikes of course. For me they are the nicest...they come without to unnecessary and heavy front fork, which lets face it, it's just for show unless you really start to spend serious money.

I did look at the lower spec 3 speed no suspension 20" version but that's still nearly £500.

Had a look at the Wiggins Chartres 20" as with BC discount and cash back I could get for under £200.
But the cassette is only 28t and the front ring is 32t so thinking climbing might be compromised. So priced up a 32t cassette for £10, better suited tyres £30 - put's it back into Frog territory..... especially as I've been offered £20 off one bringing it down to £240 with 2 sets of tyres and guards.
Also looked at Wiggle Veranti 20 but no info on gear ratios etc. and only available in yellow..... Looks good though for £190.
Just heard back from Wiggle about the ratio's on the Verenti - 12-32 cassette and a 32t chainring, so same as the Frog's.

I want that Comm for me lad, he has a 16" Hoy at the mo, have been off road with him and he really likes it. The issue is that his hands hurt after a while with rigid forks, so I have been trying to get something with some form of suspension. It may seem opulent but I think it would also allow us to go on more rides together. He loved Greno for example but burns out on all the bumps!
Think am gonna get that Comm, there is another even posher one for like £570 but he will grow out of that too fast!
