Yup, I'm no longer Mountain Bike less! Whilst I'm loving the Uni life and spending far to much on nights out, I was still missing the MTB.... Decided to browse through the online buy/sell pages but nothing really came up that was affordable. Just to put it into perspective my Student Loan gives me £2.50 a week to live off of! Anyway, I was returning home for this weekend as it's my Birthday today, so I decided to check the local MTB Facebook page. I saw this for a great price so i snapped it up and collected it yesterday... It's a 2010 Specialized Hardrock Comp Disc, vey similar in geo to my last Hardrock, however this is a size larger. I know how well they ride and the Hardrock taught me the basics of MTB! Anyway, I plan to build this up slowly. I'm stuck between going SS or 1 by, but I know I'll be running a set of 100mm forks up front. I will be buying parts when I see the odd bargain and I'm not going to rush building it. Hopefully I'll have a job sorted by the end of next week so I will have a bit more disposable income to spend on it. Just thought I'd update whilst I'm travelling back up to Uni. Hopefully this project will keep me interested in the forum and MTB world as a whole!

I think it was on the 'other' forum a couple of years ago one of the lads as a challenge built up a bike using parts for less than a tenner each (or was it twenty??) anyway he managed to build up a pretty decent bike for around 150!

I built my road MTB from an old HardRock basket case ... already had a fork, brakes, and couple other things but did it for around £100 in the end I think it was inc. x2 Michelins, Deore cranks and new Deore BB, 11/36 cassette etc.
Still going strong .. great little bike to be fair

Thats exactly what im looking to do! Cheap as chips but still good in terms of spec... I've been having a look online, i think i'll be able to do it for around £150 if i'm sensible!

These frames are a great starting point for a less expensive build, nice and strong and pretty light
I could only really salvage the frame and wheels from the original bike which was a proper state, but I already had some donor parts hanging around the cave which saved a good few £££, cus even doing it on a budget, and sourcing good used parts it starts to tot up! glad I used my old RS forks instead of the original plan of fully rigid .. the B'roads round here are rough as fook, even when I lock the forks out for a climb and forget to open them up again, I'm soon reaching for the lockout knob, as all the vibe from the high pressure road tyres hurts my wrists
Good luck with the build dude, and keep the pics coming
