First of all apologies that this never got as far as a "Forum Ride " ..but it wasn't really decided upon for certain until late yesterday after it became apparent that due to illness in the main... none of our usual riding mates were going to make it . We were going to postpone but Colin said the weather looked good so we thought bugger it ..let's just do it . So where have we been ? North York Moors you groovy funksters ..blue skies apart from one heavy 5 min shower..ground conditions were wet, muddy & a whole lot of fun ..pics to follow tomorrow ..

I will do a full route description tomorrow Glynn ..but we started at Square Corner on the Cleveland Way ..just up from the village of Osmotherley at the Northern tip of the NYM.

The ride... Starting at Square Corner saves a ball ache of a road climb from Osmotherley itself ..but we did return to the village afterwards for a pint ..and we weren't the only ones as the place was crowded with visitors keen to catch the best of autumn daylight hours before the clocks turn back next weekend . The first climb up Black Hambleton is a toughie .. Once the initial height has been gained though it's a very pleasant pootle which you can continue on all the way to the visitors centre at Sutton Bank ..but today we would be delving off onto the first b/way of note to drop down to Arden Hall and into a picture postcard valley..and along North Moor Woods A little game ..Where's Colly.. Shortly after taking that pic I had my only tumble of the day as the descent was on an extremely slippery muddy strip of track less than 6" wide which you couldn't see for the bracken at times ..anyway ..ended up on my back like an overturned giant turtle and because of the gradient and nothing solid to grab a hold of I couldn't right myself and spent a good 5 mins doing so ! When I eventually caught up with Colin he said that he was just about to come and look for me and rubbing salt into the wound ..said he cleared the lot ! Looking back on my bed of bracken ..the V on the horizon is where the drop starts The climb into North Moor Wood To be continued ...

Passing through the woods we dropped down and through the grounds of Arden Hall taking the bridleway around Coomb Hill to drop into the tea rooms at Hawnby...which happen to be at the bottom end of the village ... Near to the start of the Coomb Hill b/way Colin and myself would like to extend our sincere thanks to the farmer for ensuring our bikes remained clean on this section Pit stop..Hawnby Tea Room & Village Store So after sharing a huge pot of tea and devouring our sarnies ..this is what we faced after turning the corner ..and it's a whole lot steeper than it looks.. So we had a pint to recover .... Haha ..only joking ..I would have up-chucked straight away ! Our journey continued along the road to Moor Gate To be continued ...

At Moor Gate we followed the shooters track over Hawnby Moor ..a bit of an upward grind but the views were terrific The Ridge on the horizon is Black Hambledon on the Cleveland Way ..where we started the day Continuing on across the moor from Low Thwaites to Cock Howe at the top of the map ..when all of a sudden this bloody great thing jumped up out of the heather ..what a shock ..I nearly crapped myself ! The Cairn at Cock Howe To be continued

Looks a good ride that. As has been said before I would love to ride more natural routes like these but just don't have them where I am in Ireland. Wish I was back in scotland. What sort of distance was this one.

Was sorry not to of joined you on this one. Right decision though as Jean took me for a walk and was exhausted on the first hill due to the lurgy. Looks like some great trails too, ah well one for next year.

What sort of distance was this one. I think Colin said it came in at around the 20 mile mark ..so not huge but enough to know you had done one !lol.. Well you know that you are always welcome to join us Andy ..sort some cheap B&B and ferry over one weekend ..

This would make a auperb dry weather ride ..but was just as much fun in the mud ..

Ahh not good mate ..still a good excuse to eat plenty of ice cream .. There seems to be loads of colds / flu / tonsilitis/ sore throats doing the rounds at the moment. Guess our bodies are in shock after that sweltering summer we have had ! Hope you get better soon and are out on the bike before the typhoon season takes hold ..
