Today i had the pleasure to be shown around these woods by some usual riders. Probably one of the last opportunities to ride there before it gets too boggy.
Given the fact that its only 4 miles away from my house, its stupid that it took me this long to try it really (I did a small night ride there a few weeks ago but had to be cut short soon due to torrential rain), but you really need to go there with people who know it well, otherwise you can get lost very easily and not have as much fun. So today, at 7-30am, i set off riding from my house to meet the lads.
What a great ride, full of nice descents, technical, rocky, flowy, some nice berms and jumps, some techy climbs and obstacles...the lot! Not easy but a lot of fun...We really are spoiled for choice around Sheffield...and once again it makes me think that IMHO, there is much better riding at the Peaks besides the usual rides around Ladybower, etc.
If you ever get the chance, do it! Or maybe we should organise a forum ride there in the spring/summer.

Sounds good ...I always thought it leaned more towards downhill..maybe due to a certain Mr.Peat living on its doorstep..

Certainly some proper full on downhill runs there, but we also did some runs where guys were on DH steeds and I thought they were overkill TBH. Don't get me wrong, if anyone doesn't like techy descents, it's not the place for you...specially with the mud, wet roots and rocks today. But for example, IMHO in comparison to the Beast or Cavedale (as a reference) it's a lot more enjoyable and I think less dangerous. I thought it was great, we did 4 or 5 descents (only remember the name of one, Crags I think) and it was all great! One of the runs had this 8-10 foot vertical section...lol...all rollable but certainly grabs your attention...lolApparently there are dozens and dozens of runs. Some good climbs too! In the summer I'll be there all the time for sure!

I like wharney too mate, wouldn't have a clue where to go though, whenever I've been I've been following someone who knows their way.
Did you do the huge slabs going over the tops? It's a good section but your buggered by the end of it.

Not really Glynn...I just followed Nick. It's very easy to get lost there because it all looks the same. I'm sure a few bits/runs I know but not all of it. Defo, wharny is proper cool. Loved it and I can just imagine it on a nice and dry summer's day!? Glad I had that Magic Mary on the front today!?

Big ride today again at Wharny. Started with a bit practice jumps where you have this straight run, roll over a 8ft drop, get a bit of speed and 4 jumps one after the other...
On one of the descents (Fast Track I think) right at the bottom, hit this wet off-camber big root a bit too fast and knew straight away how it was going to end...only to stop when the side of my head hit the only bit available to be hit...a nice stump of tree. Couldn't feel my ear for hours! Ouch! Later we went for nemba...no one had done it before...so off i went first to find this really difficult section in the middle where everyone was walking...but I tried not to be defeated and went for it...pass it at first and just as I was about to put a smile on my face, I believe my pedal hit something and I went from hero to zero over the bars and did a full somersault...apparently I fell in style! Lol We did 6 descents, and the last one twice. It's called Double Diamond and it is amazing...amongst other features there is a nice slab where you can properly get some air followed by a very quick and fast berm, then and very steep 12-14 foot drop where you roll ready for a nice gap jump in front...quick blast all the way down over roots, and small slabs, berms, etc. It really is super cool!

14ft drop off, gap jumps, fuck that shit, I'm out. That's like dropping off a small house.

I'm SURE you would love it and it really gets the adrenaline going and puts a massive grin on your face. Today we had a girl also riding, and ok, she didn't do many of the sections and walk a few but did a good part of it. I'm sure you guys would love it...except nemba maybe, which I didn't as well TBH. It's also great that you can practice getting airborne in safety (if you know what I mean!?).

Me neither but it's easy to see that if you ride it there often, your skills will improve rapidly because you can have a go at many things...even tough techy climbs, or just long fire roads. We probably did 12 miles only there and i can defo feel it (I also ride there and back from mine mind!?) and if you compare it with riding at the Peaks, you get a lot more rewards I think. I'm pretty sure John would like it there, specially on the new rig!?

Both of those look fine the second one is a bit choppier and maybe steeper. No 14ft drops though, maybe 14inches
Are you meaning drops as in drop offs or like a steep chute? Looking at what the call bomb hole drop off, it looks like a steep chute with a wee small drop at the bottom.

I said drops that you roll not that you jump. If you look on the first video around the 29-30 secs you see the drop followed by the jump...however it is a lot steeper and bigger than it looks...it also has more features like small jumps and berms that have been added and not on the video. Also the videos are a bit old so a few things got eroded I guess and more gnarly. However you get a feel. I guess you will have to come and ride it to see what you think. First time there I had no problems or issues and today I had two offs...I'm not saying it's easy at all (it's not specially because all those roots are usually damp, many off camber, etc...not many things there tiny John!) but it's a lot of fun!

Got ya, I think some people do refer to a steep decline as a drop, I always think it's a chute and a drop means literally that your wheels are connected eg a drop off.
It's always steeper in real life than on film.
I think you would like the hope line at Gisburn, probably hully bulky, downhill part of home baked, swoops fun and the rest maybe a bit boring for you as its all rooty rocky climbing or small downs and ups.
There are two full on down hill lines. You might like them but too many gap jumps for me, I don't like the of the landing wall.

The right side option, has slightly bigger jumps and is generally a big rougher. There s big gap jump towards the end. Both of these have an optional gap jump qualifier and a large drop to start with as a qualifier, so yo can crash there and save it doing with too much speed further down.
