The times come to get some new rubber for my Hardrock. One of my Continental Rubber Queens gave up the ghost last month. I swapped to Specialized Fast Trak but although they roll really fast and are a great tyre for fast XC, when i point the bike down some trails and ride aggressively, they dont stand up to the abuse. Washed out twice in a week due to the tyres sliding.
Heres my dilemma, before i go spend 50 smackers on some new tyres, i'd like an opinion. I've seen a nice little combo online... Specialized Butcher Control 26x2.3 for the front and Specialized Ground Control for the rear... They seem like decent tyres, but are alot more expensive than my Rubber Queens. They are however, Tubeless ready, so would this mean i'd be able to run a Tubeless set up on my bike? Atm, my rims are not Tubeless ready, and i dont have a clue what i'd need to run the set up, however if theres benefits to be had with one, i may be persuaded...
On the other hand, i could stick with the tried and trusted and get another Rubber Queen and just keep the same combo that i've been running for a while now, which is proven to be good, especially in the wet...

You might be able to set them up ghetto tubeless, but if it was me, I would stick with what I know...
I've been using conti der barons for 2 years now and wont use anything else
Sometimes I will stick a der kaiser on the back if its really dry, but i use the der barons in all weathers. dont use spikes

I personally wasn't impressed with the Spesh ground control. They were loose in the peaks, and were as bad in Cannock. Switched them out for Ardents!

Thanks Guys!
The reviews i've read both say how they're grippy and a great all round tyre... Controversial!!! In that case, i will go with Richies idea and stick with Contis...

As with most of the comments above ..stick with what you know and trust. I have tubeless rims but the rear has a slight dink and does not hold air at the moment. .. will do a home conversion soon using a split tube .. In the meantime I am tubeless on the front with a maxxis cross mark and an ardent on the rear ..no complaints

Thanks again,
Yeah i think i will stick with the Rubber Queens / Trail Kings as they're now called! I just really liked the way they gripped, however i havent ridden on many tyres so im unaware of how they compare to other big brand tyres... Yet to give Maxxis a go either, people rave about some of their tyres.
I'll stick with the Contis for now as the weather becomes shit, i want something i know will grip!

What pressure you running , I only run around 25psi and whilst I'm not a trail centre fan I find I have no probs keeping up with most people or overtaking them on my odd visits there, can hit a good 25>30mph on quite a few of the flowing sections of Kirroughtree (the only centre I feel the need to keep returning to ) and have been clocked at 48 in the dales via gps ! Each to there own but for me they grip well in the wet and mud , are fast rolling on the hard stuff and don't dump you unexpectedly when on tarmac , I don't do strava or race but as a general allrounder they fit the bill for me and can usually squeeze 1500 >2k miles out of the rear before it's getting too worn , I run 2.3 up front and 2.1 on the rear btw

Mine are both 2.10's ... Run at about 32 as I'm 16 stones... Let me down in the peaks and Cannock.

The tyre debate is all poo anyway , they all tend to work but some suite different peoples stature/riding style better than others , the whole problem is what works for one person is poo for another so it's all down to personal choice , oh and I have 2.1 f & r on the Kona .

In the end, i went for a Continental Baron, only the cheap one. Logged onto Halfords at about 1 last night, with a nice online discount, got it for £13.49 and picked it up this morning. It looks like im running a tractor tyre on the front now, the reviews i've read seem good. It looks like it will cope with the mud just fine!
Will hopefully get to test it out next weekend!
Thanks for the help

I was really tempted by the Black Chilli. Especially considering the amount of slippy routes on my local trails! I couldnt really afford to spend that much though. I'm meant to be saving up for a car, and i went and ordered my GoPro this morning
The Baron went on fine, and i had good practice when i got a pinch flat on my ride today. Didn't take to long to get it off, however it wasn't the easiest i've done
Must say, when i got the pressure right, it performed excellent. Just gripped like shit to a blanket, it slides abit but its very predictable. I got a personal best time down one of the trails. They were pretty much perfect, a little muddy but not boggy!
When my GoPro comes, i'll get some footage up. Found an awesome jump line aswell, so sessioned that which was good fun
