I've fancied having a go at wheel building for a while now!
I've never even attempted to true a wheel though so think You Tube would be called on.
My idea was to buy a cheap truing stand and cheap bits for the wheel and just see what I can do.

I’ve built several it's not difficult but it is time consuming. You don’t really need a truing stand I use a frame / fork and a ruler taped on with alignment marks.

The only job I won't do for myself. Im scared to death that I'm going to do it wrong, hit a big jump and the wheels fold beneath me. My Old man once tried to lace a motorcycle wheel. He's a stubborn sod who can turn his hand to anything but ended up getting the pro's to do it!

Ive an old horrible Suntour thing with about 60mm travel on it so thatll do. To be honest id not though of using an old one! Now just need to find some places for spokes an bits

eBay is one good source or search for "just riding along custom wheels" their spokes are an ok price even for singles. I tend to stick with Sapim / DT Swiss parts.
