With that wonderful time of the year approaching looking to get the lad a "proper" bike, seen this little beauty for him, bit pricey but he won't get fook all else. Took him to Halfords to get him to have a sit on and ride a 24" and he said it felt good, currently rides a 20". Do any of the dads out there have any recommendations on a good spec 24" or any experience in buying these little machines ?

Looks a good little bike ..I bought a similar sized Trek for my son ..the only thing I would say is don't expect too much out of the forks ...and when you take him off-road ..even on stuff that's not too technical always remember that you will be sitting on a much more capable bike than he is ...do don't put him off before he has got started!

Chain reaction had them for £120, expensive but I can pass it down to the next one when he's older, I wanted to buy one of these but they were sold out at the time www.commencal-store.co.uk/Mobile/MBSCProduct.asp?pdtid=14441965I started with the seat low so she got the hang of steering and keep raising it so she's almost scooting on tip toes, getting there

They're not much more expensive than the strider one I was looking at, so you've give me something to think about

Cheers hodgy,I had seen that but it's way too much bike for my boy at the moment, not to mention the price,he's only seven and I love him to bits but not that much ! Plus the fact it cost more than my bike (at least thats what the missus thinks anyway ).

I bought a second hand Specialized Hardrock 26" wheel/13" frame bike for my daughter (she's 10). It was a boys model, but the colours she wanted (black/blue). Immaculate condition, disk brakes, click/trigger shifters - perfect. A bit like this one but in black/blue: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/321480900862Guy was asking £210 on preloved, got it for £180. Bargain.

Hope so ..I had the same theory about my then 10 year old boy last year ...he also got a decent scooter last year and with more freedom being afforded to him over the summer to get out and about with his mates ..biking with dad took a back seat and the mountain bike hardly got a look in . It was way cooler to be on the scooter with his mates ..what the hell ..at least he was getting exercise still ..hopefully he will come back to it !

Weight is a big problem with kids bikes, while looking great I think even the Stinky is about 15.5Kg. Once you get to 26" there is a whole world of lightweight parts. I've used a XS 26" frame and put 24" wheels on for my 10 year old. Even then the 24" wheels and short crank are a lot heavier than standard parts. From memory Scott Spark Jnr was one of the lighter full suss kids bikes and of course Isla make some pretty light hardtails, though not very cool looking.
